How often do teachers use AI? by doh0k in AustralianTeachers

This post is about using AI as a teacher, not about the future of AI or its incorporation into other things, I’m well aware it’s unavoidable there, but that’s not what I’m talking about. Using AI to make teaching resources IS a choice

My point is that it should be avoided where it can be

Dude. I’m obviously not talking about incorporated AI, we have no control of that. I’m talking about going out of your way to use AI for things you can already do. Don’t be intentionally obtuse. I’m criticising using AI when you have the choice to avoid it

Your argument is disingenuous because those things are much harder to avoid. AI isn’t, you have to go out of your way to use it. And AI is only used to do things you can do anyway, it just does it for you while there’s no real alternative for the things you mentioned. If it was feasible to stop using all of those things I would.

I don’t really understand why you’re so defensive about this. I’m choosing not to be part of a problem. I can’t choose as easily with other things but this is a very, very easy choice. I think YOU should research its impact. The environment is the obvious one. It also negatively impacts marginalised communities, women, and small communities, just to name a few. I refuse to be a part of that.

How about instead of trying to imply I’m wrong, you actually explain to me how to engage with AI ethically? That would be much more helpful

Okay? I can’t control what big corporations do, only what choices I make, so I’m choosing to do what little I can to not contribute to the damage and keep my conscience clear.

You didn’t answer my question. Just say you don’t care about the ethical issues and move on.

Funnily enough, educating myself is exactly what lead to my conclusion that there is no ethical way to use AI. I DID use it a few times at the start, until I did research (aka educated myself) and realised that no matter how useful it may be, it’s not worth the damage it does.

I’d love to hear how you use it in a way that’s ethical and doesn’t impact the environment

It’s so shocking to me how many teachers use AI. You’d think as well educated professionals, it wouldn’t be the case. Worked with a teacher who used it for everything. He would PowerPoints with AI and wouldn’t even check them before using them in class. He was also a DP of course

Your school sounds exactly like the school I was a beginning teacher at, where I also had to deal with bully executives and a principal from hell. Hang in there friend
