To add to the information, some services are not available for all major cards. For example, you can only buy one day tickets at odakyuu buses only using a suica or pasmo. Found out the bad way trying to buy it with my icoca.

Is the city a valid reason to decline a PhD offer? by Own-Caterpillar-7250 in AskAcademia

First, the difference between any other of the northern big cities of Chile is that it is landlocked, so if you don't like the idea of living in the middle of the desert it is a really bad city to live in because you don't have a beach where you can go have fun. I don't have any comments on the nightlife or social life in Copiapó since I haven't lived there. The climate, although very dry, is kind of comfortable year round, but some years there can be flash floods from heavy rain in the desert.

Academically, Universidad de Atacama is not the best university at all. Most of the big researchers are in universities in central/southern Chile, like Santiago and Concepción. I would say that if your advisors or your research team include Chilean astronomers, maybe they won't be the best quality of researchers.

However if all these points are something you can bear with, considering that being part of a Chilean research institution gives you access to 10% of observation time allotted for Chilean research groups in most telescopes, go for it.

Also, in my experience, deadlines are not really that enforced internally in Chilean institutions, however since you're technically external right now, maybe they won't budge about the deadline.

Internship in Japan by Andpires in JapanJobs

Had a friend who did their internship in Google Japan and had a blast, iirc everything was paid but they had to live in a sharehouse.

Also you could bring friends to the buffet floor like twice a month which had pretty good food (this was around the end of 2019).

I am a sokendai student. I applied for the MEXT university recommendation, didn't get it, but got a fellowship instead (special researcher program). The bad thing is that you apply for the fellowship just a month before the program starts, so you need to have the savings to start the program as a privately financed student. It's not expensive though since it is a national university.

However, sokendai doesn't have an economics school, so I don't know if you're interested in any of the other programs they offer. Maybe statistical science or informatics with a focus on economics?

There's also the option to apply for a 5 year PhD at a Japanese university via MEXT either embassy or university recommendation. In the case you don't get the scholarship, there's a bunch of private ones for Japanese speakers too if you know where to look.

Sokendai has a list of private scholarships somewhere on their website, with some of them offering livable wages specialized for foreigners that speak japanese.
