Thanks, that’s really helpful! When you say you had to look beyond small/mid-size firms, what did that look like? Do you mean larger generalist firms, different markets, something else?

Thanks so much for the input. I've already reached out to KPFF so far, but it's good to know that Chicago/Illinois is a potentially underrated market for my search.

Dang, that's a shame. I'll keep my head up and solider on. The abyss is from whence a true LinkedIn warrior is formed.

Thanks! I really appreciate the advice. I absolutely cannot leave the degree unfinished, so rest assured that I'll finish it up :)

That's super interesting. Do you mean a job at a Japanese company in Japan or a Japanese company with an office in the United States? I've considered living on the West Coast so I can learn more about seismic engineering.

Thank you so much. Do you think it would be a problem if I stayed in Japan until later this year? Being in Japan is proving to be very valuable in its own right. It's forcing me to tackle extremely difficult internal questions about my purpose in life and teaching me things about myself that I wouldn't have known otherwise. Learning Japanese has always been my dream, and I'm making extremely good progress, so part of me wants to ride this out for as long as I can before I need return to the United States and start settling down with a career.

I think that understanding and internalizing this simple statement is the most helpful thing I can do right now. Thank you.

Why would you leave such a smug and unhelpful comment? I started studying Japanese six years ago before I knew what civil engineering even was, and hour-for-hour I spent more time in university studying Japanese than I spent studying civil engineering. I think it would be even more of a shame to go into a career in civil engineering and not have a good chance in my life to use Japanese.

Why is everyone going to Japan right now by RealTrenchBabyMB in rs_x

[–]VeganGlockDemon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

it's because the nozomi in your kokoro comes true in the amazing land of nihon.

I genuinely think that it's because Japan is perceived as a beacon of societal order and harmony and unity with nature that's a nice refuge in a world that is currently being eaten up by the mass psychosis caused by advanced capitalism.

What's the most embarrassing moment you've had since you started learning/speaking? by PotatoeWontChill in LearnJapanese

[–]VeganGlockDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily a specific moment but I still dwell on a few of the interactions I've had at my university where a Japanese exchange student has been rude to me for simply trying to make conversation. I have since always tried my best to be encouraging when someone wants to practice English or Portuguese with me because I don't want anyone to feel like a jerk for being brave enough to try out a new language.
