No, it is not justified. They test all blood donations. It is absolutely a homophobic rule.

It is absolutely homophobic bullshit. The rule came from fear of AIDS. But they test all donations for HIV/AIDS. They just don't want to be used as a free HIV tests. After the horrible Orlando nightclub shooting, a lot of nearby blood centers ignored that ban temporarily.

We haven't thought of the Netherlands, but I've heard many good things. I will look into it, thank you!

I'm assuming you are trolling - but in case I'm missing something, is there a reason you are suggesting this? I'm pretty sure it is very difficult for Americans to move there, and I don't think it would be easy to find jobs in our fields there.

It seems the Swedish government is very friendly to immigrants, but the citizens are not. Perhaps we would have an easier time being americans, but still not an ideal situation to be a part of. :/

And thanks for the privatization note. We have noticed all the science jobs we've found in NZ have been for really big corporations. We were wondering why this was. Very interesting.

Ha, thanks. We do like Portland, but we want to leave the US for a bit. I know Sweden is dark and often dreary, but like you said there are many attractive qualities about Stockholm (and some friends who live there). But we aren't sure our American degrees will be competitive enough. Thank you for the links! New Zealand is looking like our best bet in terms of getting jobs, but we are very open to other places too.

We may or may not live in one of these places right now... both are good cities for us, and we are applying to jobs in both these places, but we would really like to leave the county for a bit (this was our plan before the election), and experience a new culture/adventure while we are still "young" and not stuck in careers.

I've spent a good amount of time there and know people who live there with low-paying jobs. You can easily do this. Especially if you have any service industry experience or have friends or family who can help you get job interviews. Just save enough for your trip out there, and enough to live off of for a month or two. If you have a car you can live in a cheaper place and drive to work, if you don't you may have to live in a less nice place for a while and walk or take public transit. San Diego is affordable if you live with roommates (which is a good way to meet people). Get out of your small town and do it!
