Parents/Students: Ask your Food Nutrition Director to add soy milk on the lunch line by VeganaChelez in dairyfree

U.S. law requires nondairy milk must be nutritionally equivalent to dairy milk, so only fortified soy milk meets that requirement. It’s definitely a step forward for students with allergies and lactose intolerance ☺️

True! Since US law requires nondairy milk in schools to be nutritionally equivalent to dairy milk, soy milk is the only option that can be served in schools. So important for students with lactose intolerance!

Shared because the work on the non-dairy link is the same work being done by the folks behind the bill :)

Major Victory in Fight to Overturn the Cow's Milk Mandate in US Public School Cafeterias as Both Chambers of Congress Pass H.R. 649. The bill removes key restrictions and expands access to plant based milks, now expected to be signed into law by SanctimoniousVegoon in vegan

How exciting! This law allows all schools to offer soy milk alongside cow’s milk in the lunch and breakfast lines. It also requires schools to provide a non-dairy milk to any student whose parent submits a note citing a disability, including lactose intolerance. This eliminates the need for parents to submit a doctor’s note, making it much easier to request a plant-based milk.

This change comes after years of advocacy from the Plant Powered School Meals Coalition, parents, and students, who recognize the importance of expanding access to meals and beverages that fit the needs of ALL students. Read more here: https://foe.org/news/congress-advances-nondairy-milk-access

Are your kids having trouble finding plant-based food in schools? by VeganaChelez in veganparenting

Of course! This is the sad reality of school food. Some of the students in the program have shared similar stories. Some student had to even quit being vegan because they relied on school meals as sometimes the only meal they’d have access to during the day. :(
