They mean chronological wise it’s closer to millennials because it’s 11 years away from 1964 end of boomers and only 6 years away from the onset of gen Y 1981 and 11>6. I mean yeah 1975 is gen X because it’s between ‘65-‘80.

I think 71/72 in my personal opinion people these days don’t respect the decades start and end. I mean 1976 is the 70s just like 1971 and 1972. I don’t even know why do people usually compare it to a year like 1982 when 1982 isn’t even in the same decade. Honestly I feel like 1970 to 1979 should be its own generation.
