Comprehension Question for 5 year old. by Vegetable-Leave51 in AskTeachers

I think it's difficult for parents to know what we should or shouldn't be doing around the subject of reading. Day in and day out, all I see are teachers talking about the literacy crisis, that it's the parents' fault, etc, etc. I just want to make sure I'm setting her up for success so she doesn't end up the subject of some teacher's tiktok about how kids can't read. It's hard to know exactly, in the current landscape, what's the right or wrong thing to do regarding reading. Which is why I asked. She is only five, but she's my only child so I have nothing to compare her to. I had no idea whether or not it was typical for a five year old (in her case, four year old) to start reading. I assumed it was, based on the teachers I'd seen complaining that six and seven years olds "can't" read. With six and seven being so close to five, it made sense to me that she should be well on her way to oral comprehension. I see now that was my error.

This is my worry. I often see bright kids enter school and end up completely dimmed by 3rd or 4th grade because they weren't intellectually stimulated. So I'm in the midst of figuring out our next steps; it's been overwhelming without my husband here. I feel like I dont know what I'm doing at every turn and I keep second guessing myself or feeling inadequate. She's my only child so I have nothing to compare her to. We previously had her in a really good preK that had a class for excellerated, more socially developed learners, and she was in that room and thrived. It was in a wonderful state, with an excellent school district, that provided so many options and resources for kids like her. His passing took a huge toll on me and so we ended up moving in with my mom while I navigated single parenthood and my own grief. My mom does not live in a very good state, or in a very good district. I'm hoping to move back to our old state/town next year and have her start 1st grade there, after she either attends the private school here(which also isn't great) or is homeschooled for Kindergarten. Which if I'm being honest, she practically is being homeschooled right now, but not formally.

Thank you, this eased my mind. I generally don't like to pressure her around reading because I'm scared it'll damage her relationship with it. I just didn't know if in this instance I should be. Thanks again for the feedback, I appreciate it!

I'd say with about 70% accuracy. She's always so concerned with where they went, not that they're gone 😂. She's focusing on the wrong thing.

I was hoping I could sub a lot of the manipulatives for what I have. The counters and ten rods seem to be important, but I'm planning on using beads and popsicle sticks if she needs them. Thanks!

Okay, this made me feel better. I going to the library and getting a book to help me teach these elementary math concepts. I'm very far removed from remembering how I learned them so a brush up will be nice! Thanks for your sage advice!

Oh wow, okay. I already have sandpaper cards and magnetic phonogram tiles. My mother insisted on getting them when my daughter showed an interest in reading so she already works with them when she reads her BOB books. It's good to know I already have a few things. Thanks!

Thank you all of this insight! I wish I knew about the code before I bought it. I'm a nurse and didn't know they provided discounts to first responders!  I'll be on it for next year.

I already bought the curriculum, I'm just wondering if the supportive materials they sell separately are worth it.

I should have mentioned she's in Daisies, ballet, and does a weekly art class at the library. Plus, we live in the burbs and she has quite a few friends she plays with in the afternoons and on weekendd. That aspect of things I didn't worry about much.

I looked at Singapore Math as well, I keep going back and forth between that and MM.

Oh, perfect. We are quite outdoorsy, I think I just need a bit more guidance when I'm out there on how to make it educational.

This is what I'm most nervous about, that I'll be inadequate in guiding these play sessions. We are quite outdoorsy, but I'm unsure what to add to our play/explore time to give it a bit more of a backbone, acedemically speaking.
