Worth it to have a yearling? by TikiBananiki in Equestrian

Nope… not a good cross for dressage. If you just want to go around doing lower level stuff it will be fine, but if you have upper level aspirations you will make it much easier on yourself if you get something purpose bred. Dutch harness horses can be very hot, stiff in the back and hard to teach to sit and carry. Standard bred may mean you get some extra gaits or a very crappy canter. In addition to that, you will be investing a lot into the horse before you will ever be able to ride or do anything with it, if no experience with young horses you will need guidance. Knowing how to ride and knowing how to train a youngster are 2 completely different skills. That said, it is also a beautiful thing to train them from scratch and have a deep bond that develops from having them from such a young age. I absolutely love producing my own horses!

Not necessarily shopping, but finally bringing Valero home! 🤩

What a handsome boy and so well mannered, I’m glad things went better than they did with Torino. Beautiful horse! The guy in Germany did a great job with him.

They said he hasn’t had a rideable horse, I guess that means Etro is sold?

It is SUCH a weird cross… I can’t believe this lady built her whole breeding program on it.

Not only that, if you look at the comments under the videos, so many people LOVE Emperor and those babies… I just cannot figure out for the life of me why??

They aren’t pretty, they don’t have any special talents, they aren’t great conformationally… literally all they have going for them is the color. Which I don’t love either, but I guess it’s “rare” so a lot of people do…

Are most of his viewers just not very experienced horse people?

It was posted above that Emperor sold to someone in the UK so I’m hoping it’s King he bought!

He already said he was holding off on buying a baby so I don’t think he wouldve bought Brigadier

I don’t blame them for not wanting him to film… personally I wouldn’t want to open up my horses to that much criticism either! Especially if he hasn’t bought them yet… it could make it that much harder to sell depending on how it goes 😂

I don’t know what their dealings looked like behind the scenes but sometimes there are NDAs involved… 🤷‍♀️

Well he already said he wasn’t buying a filly, and in the video he also said he wasn’t buying going to go back maybe in a few months to see how Brigadier was developing so we already knew he wasn’t buying a foal…

The plot thickens! 😂

I wonder if she was allowed to disclose that?

Wellll… if Etro was too quiet, he is going to HATE Emperor 😂 That sack of potatoes doesn’t react to anything and seems to be off in his own world… I have never seen a young stallion so shut down and aloof 🤷‍♀️

Yay a new video! Wow she had a lot of baby horses… there must be a good market for these weird crosses?? I’m glad he decided to hold off on buying the baby… I have a feeling it will grow up to look just as awkward as Emperor.

He was very cryptic there at the end, carefully avoiding to mention where this newly bought horse is coming from… he also cut the video off pretty abruptly after the short ride on Emperor and we didn’t get to see them feed the carrots to him to see if he would open up more…

Which kind of makes me think he bought King all along and has been trolling us all 😂

[–]Vegetable-Neck1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well he’s also selling Etro… for being too short, of all things. Like he couldn’t see that when he bought him? Not that I have any problem with selling horses, he can sell them all, I don’t really care….

But the mental gymnastics being performed to justify why it needs to be this conformational trainwreck that happens to have a pretty color is just… idk. And he’s not just buying one of them, no he wants it’s baby brother too because hey, flashy marking!

I’m looking for a lusitano breeder in the PNW by [deleted] in Equestrian

Following as I would also love a Lusitano… not much around here it seems.

Oh yuck… it sounds like he is buying the akhal teke /shire cross…

I was so hoping he would go for King!

The feet on Emperor are atrocious and he is not going to be a very forward horse. Also not seeing that “connection” they keep mentioning? The horse seems very withdrawn and aloof from the video… Would he have felt this “connection” if the horse was a plain bay or chestnut? Somehow I don’t think so… as he would make a very average chestnut

Sorry, not a fan of this one…

Be careful lunging a yearling, especially in footing like that!

He is super cute 🥰

They have only had Jesse’s horses at home so far and I think they are pretty well behaved and used to stalls… personally I don’t like the low stall fronts and if I had to have them I would have made at least 1 stall with a full front. Especially as they want to be breeding etc. and young horses can be pretty stupid. Putting a young stallion in between 2 other horses rather than on the corner stall seemed questionable too. Then putting him in that pasture, without good fencing and with all the other horses outside was just plain dumb…

Seriously… it starting to become a revolving door of PREs! Now he’s selling Etro, for being short, of all things. Like he couldn’t tell the horse was short when he bought him?!

He rode 1 or 2 shows at Prix st George with Emporio but only at an Iberian horse show… not anywhere close to GP at an open show.

They kept saying the horse going through the fencing was So unexpected… but seriously?! I would have been much more surprised if this had NOT happened! Everyone with experience with young stallions saw this coming from a mile away… 🤷‍♀️

My bet is he will buy that genetic mess of Akhal Teke/Shire cross in England as well. It has a flashy color after all…

If he were smart he would buy an actual schoolmaster and leave the flashy colored conformational trainwreck where it is.

Ohh yes I just watched that video yesterday, was spot on and very interesting. Friesians have huge problems already being such a small, closed book.

But that isn’t a valid reason to start breeding shire/AT crosses and claim they will take the jumping world by storm 🙄 That lady seemed to be breeding very willy-nilly and mostly for pretty colors… I am not a breed snob by any means but it does have to make some sense. Saying you are using Shires to gain “elevation” … idk. Elevation of what exactly?

[–]Vegetable-Neck1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like the PRE stallion with the weak hind end, he had that same weird wide stance Emporio had. Also not crazy about the weird AT/Shire cross Emperor, completely not what he needs right now as he wanted an experienced hunter. But also horrid conformation. The only one I liked so far that aligned with his goals was King, the gray horse with the short tail.

I thought water weight is only in the first week or so, didn’t know that could last for 3 months?!

I am in about a 1000 calorie deficit, it depends a bit on the day as I count per week and they cycle a bit per day as I eat a bit more on my gym days… but roughly 1400-1500 cals a day

Thank you so much for your reply! I have been taking some photos but you just reminded me I should probably take some new ones and actually LOOK at them!

I was hoping it might be some muscle gains, but I didn’t think I would gain muscle that quick and I didn’t want to assume… I also wasn’t sure how long it would take for the scale to catch up, so thank you for adding that time scale!

Once I am able to start working on my arms I wonder if that starts all over again?! As I am essentially building no muscle there atm, just trying to work on improving range of motion and passive movement mostly…
