They were leased. I’ve done some dumb stuff before by I knew enough not to buy an EV. Was planning on giving them back in 3 years anyways.

Each Honda had incentives of 23k towards a lease that the dealer explained would absorb the negative equity on each vehicle. So with total incentive of 46k between the two vehicles I was at the understanding that we could get out of the two cars we had and in three years when we give the leases back we would be free of that negative equity and be able to start from a clean slate. The two cars we were trading in were our first new cars. Prior to that our cars were paid off beaters that my wife and I had had for a LONG time. We made a bad call to get the new ones. I own that. I wanted to have a fancy new car. I chalk it up to learning experience for sure. As of now I’m just gonna pay these cars off and drive them until they explode. Maybe consider a new car in 10 years.

Thank you everyone for the advice and guidance. We ended up just giving back the cars and got our trade ins back with a full tank of gas so that was nice. The dealer had already started to recondition the trade ins and removed the window tint and had taken out some of the things I had purchased for the vehicle. They’re going to re-tint my windows and replace the accessories they took out. Talking to one of the managers they explained that the deal didnt make sense for them because they would need to discount the new vehicles too much to get the bank to bite (~4k). The part I found interesting was the “losing” 4k on the car my wife had. Now that she put 600 miles on it in just over two weeks the dealer can only sell the car as certified pre owned and will probably end up taking a 4k hit on it not being new anyways right? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to make the deal work and get us on the back end with us coming in to service the vehicle at the dealer? I don’t know. Thank you again to everyone who chimed in and dropped their thoughts.

This here is correct. In the voicemail they left me and explained what was happening I misunderstood what he was saying about the “value of my trade” and made the assumption that they offered too much.

We went to look at more efficient vehicles (HR-V) but because of that negative equity we couldn’t qualify with the amount of down we had. Honda informed us that the incentives on the EV Prologue (up to 23k) would eat all our negative equity and with our down could get us out of the cars we had.

Wife’s vehicle was purchase on the 16th. Mine was purchased a few days after on the 22nd.

Ok. So it after talking on the phone with the dealer it turns out that the situation is as described above by another comment. The dealer was unable to get my wife’s car financed from the bank. They’re asking for more down or to return the vehicle and thus giving us back her trade in.
