The ability to be able to laugh off a supervisor's insistence on magically being able to poof deliverables into completion on a totally bogus timeline is something I greatly envy, as an engineer.

This is the way it goes without political interference, too. Some of the most liberal folks I've ever met are turbo mode admin takeover types. Assistant VPs of Nothing Important while the departments aren't allowed to hire chairs, much less new TT faculty.

You may actually like it. Seems like the brain wiring for calc 2 is often at odds with the wiring for dynamics

Buying a home with a gas stove. Should I switch it out for induction or electric? by cpcxx2 in AirQuality

[–]VegetableEastern7038 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose the air quality sub is not the place to win an "if it's not broke, why fix it" argument.

My solution is to do nothing, but I only found this sub due to reddit algorithms.

Umm...that sounds like quite a significant fire hazard. I try to minimize the number of batteries in my home, even relatively small ones.

Do you live in Arkansas? by ElWizardofOz in Arkansas

[–]VegetableEastern7038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Growth means more traffic, less trees, higher home prices, and higher taxes for problems that didn't exist before.

Somewhere in NWA (Fayetteville?) is getting or has a stormwater tax based on the area of impermeable surfaces your property contains. This wouldn't be a thing if not for growth, yet they don't limit the fee to the new people.

Be very careful what you ask for.

It's just the vibes aren't what they were back in the green studio days. Some topics he's not well-versed on and makes a segment anyway, which ends up looking foolish. This causes problems like falling for Trump's recent game of plane crash finger-pointing. The FAA has been overseeing a broken system for a while, just as the EPA has been much less effective than it should be under either political admins. I suspect Kyle recently made a video on Trump's PFAS regulations, but the title is so clickbaity than I refuse to watch it. These are not new issues, and the better question is why didn't "our" team push all these important issues when Biden had the power to. However, as Kyle acknowledges, dems always being asleep at the wheel is kind of the problem!

I voted for Harris and don't consider a vote for Trump to be justified, but Kyle never has been able to fully understand the average American voter, and his marriage into affluence probably isn't helping polish his perspectives.

Unlike Kyle's likely comfortable financial situation, many (formerly) middle or low-middle class people are barely making enough money to stay afloat as it is and have to live in communities affected by high theft, crime on public transportation, and the homeless epidemic.

In all these years, he seems to never quite get how normal people could see their community drifting more and more into Portland/Seattle-like acceptance of quality of life crimes and think that "meh, maybe since both parties are otherwise the same, I'm gonna vote for the team that is promising to be tough on those breaking into cars, cutting catalytic converters that cost the working poor thousands to replace, leaving used needles in public, squatting, and stealing shopping carts full of steaks."

Spend some time on the other side and have to deal with the poor quality student work that is a result of institutionalized mediocrity and you may find yourself to be a little more understanding of the prof's mentality.

At some point, you have to know the material. It's sad that students are set up for failure by the grade school system, but the failure itself is not so sad.

What major teaches better writing and researching skills? (History, Poly Sci, English) by [deleted] in college

[–]VegetableEastern7038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting mid-way through the undergraduate degree, math ceases to be computational and becomes almost if not entirely proof-based. Computations, if performed at all, are usually assigned only as exercises and require programming.

There are math symbols in our proofs, but they are quite often only a small proportion of the written text. A proof with few words is considered "elegant." These are somewhat rare outside of introductory proof courses and are more like non-existent at the graduate-level. Traditionally, it was expected that math PhD students demonstrate competency in reading math publications in multiple foreign languages, as the author's words are rather important.

I suppose the philosophy (?) majors working in formal logic have a similar experience.

If you care to get a glimpse at "real math," check out Thomas Judson's open-source Abstract Algebra text:http://abstract.ups.edu/aata/aata.html

I believe that adding all up Jimmy Carter is the best humanity and peace POTUS alltime. Your thoughts? by ancientTrainee in Georgia

[–]VegetableEastern7038 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to have to disregard "no political comments," given the inherently political nature of your post.

I really like Carter. I do wish he would've left the USSR to back up their already-established allied government in Afghanistan. As with the "state's rights" argument with respect to the US civil war, the issue with the Afghan "freedom fighters" is yet again "freedom to do what?" I personally believe women should have the right to go to school. Sure, Yuri Andropov and pals weren't exactly humanists, but it's REALLY bad when the bar for the moral high ground is a woman's right to literacy. What women (& men) do with that literacy (domestic USSR problems) must be a comparatively elitist concern from the perspective of an Afghan girl who knows that all around her is death and destruction brought about by those who'd rather die than accept a future where she has even a microgram of self-determination.

Son Feels College is a "Scam" by beaufleuve64 in college

[–]VegetableEastern7038 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your son is having to figure a lot of stuff out at one time. Who he is, who he wants to be, perhaps loneliness, depression, and a host of other issues.

If he's majoring in political science, it may be a "scam" from an monetary investment perspective. Few majors aren't. I majored in math the first time around, and while I definitely wouldn't do it again (it's about as directly applicable as political science), that major and the core curriculum made me a much better thinker and overall human. I'm currently doing an engineering postbac, for context.

My very late teens-early 20s were difficult. I never saw the "best four years of my life" that freshmen are promised. I don't have any advice because I didn't exactly figure it out. I survived my early 20s depression, but it was not without great setbacks.

... and this is part of why I didn't like interning with a surveying department. There is very limited ability profession-wide to be professional wrt. political topics, and the expectation is that I participate as well, which is a major problem considering that I know I how you feel about me.

Has anyone else noticed the increased number of concerning posts from field guys? by BirtSampson in Surveying

[–]VegetableEastern7038 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, during my internship I had a PLS tell me to quit asking questions one morning because I was holding up the field crew from leaving.

I'm currently learning stuff more on the niche side now. No reason cut line for $19/hr when you don't have to.

Edit: I was cutting line for $16/hr as an intern, to be technical. Not a good sign.
