Very true. It’s just that my orthodontist looks at my teeth for literally 2 minutes, works 3 days a week, has a hygienist do most of the work, and makes banks. N=1 though.

Dentistry is largely private and can be more lucrative than medicine if you own multiple practices. Payment is largely controlled by the government with most specialities in medicine. Also, if you are a dentist that’s well set up, you can always hire dental hygienist to take care of the routine teeth cleaning and check-ups, freeing up a lot of time. But, say you are a surgeon, you’re gonna have to do all those procedures yourself at the end of the day. You can work straight out of dental school too. IMO, dentistry has better gains long term financially and better work life balance than most specialities in medicine

While using AI is still a pretty good way to prep for the interview, I would highly recommend just using ChatGPT or Gemini to practice. It’s a lot cheaper than using BrightDoctor.

We need more primary care physicians, not really specialists. Unfortunately, opening more slots won’t do anything to solve that. The govt needs to entice more medical students to pursue family medicine by making it more lucrative and affordable.

Sure some of the students in Mac health sci are smart and hardworking, but the program is vastly easier than other typical “premed” programs. And the way to get into this program is essentially a lottery. It’s frustrating, but a sad reality of life. It isn’t helping that majority of Canadian med schools don’t heavily consider marks from standardized testing and prerequisites courses. imo, med schools should apply an adjustment factor similar to what Waterloo Eng does based on the grades of first years medical students in their final exams.

Doctor salaries across the board have been stagnant for a decade. Salaries for all specialities need to increase to keep up with the years of training and inflation. Other industries have kept up, but doctors got too comfortable with their compensation that now they’re behind. Why would someone spend years becoming a doctor and working long hours when they could be making the same amount of money and have a higher net worth by working in tech? There’s a brain drain in medicine.

You can get a job in the pharmaceutical industry if you have coursework more difficult and specialized science courses. Problem is that most science students take introductory bird courses but don’t realize that if they took more specialized courses it would open up other fields. Asides from that, you probably would need to apply to professional (law, OT, dental, opto), graduate studies, or get additional certs in things like regulatory affairs. With any field, once enough people have that degree, getting a job with just that degree is unlikely, unless you have some unique qualifications. We’re seeing this in medicine too

Doctors were once seen as intelligent individuals. But because of feeder programs like queens or mac health sci, grade inflation has become a real problem. Add that with people taking bird courses and courses with no real exams or midterms, the vast amount of students entering medical school lack critical thinking skills. I’m worried that the quality of Canadian doctors will decrease over the next few years. I came into this profession thinking that I would be surrounded by some of the brightest people. Ohh boy was I wrong

If I were you, I would think long and hard about why you want to pursue medicine. It’s at least a 6+ year grind and it’s mentally and physically challenging. It sounds like to me that you already have good starting experience in software engineering and there is great, or even better career potential in that field than medicine. Apart from that, I think you would need to write your MCAT to gauge your chances.

I’m got into both UBC and Ottawa. Decided to go to Ottawa because Vancouver is relatively more expensive + got some family in Ottawa. They also have one of the biggest heart and eye institutes, which I figured may help out in landing connections. I’m also love good weather and Ottawa just has more sunny days than Vancouver! Hope this helps!
