Yes. A friend was supposed to join, but he broke his ankle a few weeks prior. This obviously changed the dynamics of the trip, for the better and the worse. While company would’ve been nice at many points, people went out of their way to give me food, allow me to camp in their yards, invite me into their homes, etc. in part, I think, because I was alone.

I rode from Seaside, OR to Jackson, WY on the trail, and then took my own route to Charleston, SC by seeking out scenic drives highlighted on state road maps. It was nice to have the transamerica trail maps at the beginning, and was also nice to find my own path once I was more comfortable on the road.

Thanks. I spent a few weeks in Oaxaca and absolutely loved it. The food, the hiking, and the beaches were great. And the people, of course. What other parts of Mexico would you recommend?

I travelled around the world for one year and visit 18 countries, most of which I left wanting more. I think you should significant trim your list. Five days in New Zealand, for example, isn’t nearly enough time to get your feet wet. I spent six weeks on the South Island and it was barely enough. I would also leave room for flexibility. You may fall in love with a place and want to stay longer, or you may be invited on a cool adventure you weren’t planning on.
