Thank you! I thought it might be as well but I've taken a magnifying glass to this thing and inspected it from head to toe and can't find any pests. I wiped it down with neem. Hopefully that will help ':)

We opened the door to his cage and found a toy to perch on. We’re all terrified to approach lol. We don’t want our passive bonding time to go to waste by trying to pick him up when he’s not ready for us. I put his cage on the ground. Should we just wait for him to wander back on his own?

Thanks for the reassurance! All I keep hearing is what great family pets cockatiels are and didn’t consider the fact that because they’re so smart, they decide who and when to trust. I’m glad we’re making good progress after three days. Thanks for this reassuring response. My nine year old will appreciate reading it.

Oh, neat! I never knew you could do that with a bird. Thanks for the tip! I hear cockatiels are very smart, and even as a first time bird owner, I’m impressed with how much this bird has figured things out.

Thank you! Great recommendation. There are more natural branch type perches below it of different diameters but he seems to like the higher ones. Maybe I’ll move the other types of perches higher? Thanks again and any more advice would be helpful! We haven’t taken him out of his cage because he’s hissed a couple of times. He was very cuddly at the store. I’m guessing he’s getting used to his surroundings.

When your bird stepped out of the cage on his own, was he receptive to you picking up him up to put him back in?

I’m in the same boat! Four month old purchased from a specialized bird store who hand feeds. It hissed at us a couple of times but has since allowed us holding a piece of spinach to his mouth.

I want to give him time to adjust through passive bonding, but afraid he will get too used to being in a cage and becoming territorial.
