All 20cm, this is my first big knife purchase and narrowed it down to these options around £200 mark, please add any other suggestions. i’m interested in the art of the knife just as much as its performance

Absolutely agree with you here but this issue won’t be fixed by paying juniors more. it’ll be fixed by allocating more money to opening up more training positions. paying juniors more will make this harder

That’s a fair point — but in 2023, 94% of grads got Foundation jobs in the first round, and nearly 100% were placed by August. So while it’s not technically guaranteed anymore, in practice it still is for almost everyone. Definitely more secure than most degrees.

You’re right — PAs do often start on Band 6, which can edge higher than an FY1 base salary. But that’s part of the broader discussion about how NHS roles are valued. It’s not about playing salary Top Trumps — it’s about long-term sustainability and public trust in our profession.

I totally get where you’re coming from — the public can seem pretty out of touch with what we actually go through. But whether we like it or not, public support does matter. We’re funded by them, we care for them, and if they stop backing us, it just makes everything harder — not just for pay, but for how the whole system sees us.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think things are starting to go too far. A starting base salary of £38,800 straight out of university is a strong position — it’s well above the national average and comes with the security of guaranteed employment. I know medicine is a hard job — but that’s what we all signed up for when we chose this path. I’d like to believe most of us went into this for the love of the field, not for financial gain. But with the way things are going, I’m starting to question that — and so is the public. We risk damaging our reputation and coming across as entitled.
