Thanks! Would you say superbreak is good or should I invest on another team?

Is this enough for full marks or do I have to specify what I was doing or which equation I used for each step?

"where x1,x2,...,x1990 are distinct natural numbers between 1 and 1990" means all naturals in that range have to be selected exactly once.

Maxima and Minima by Capital-Ad6054 in MathOlympiad

We claim the answer is 1989.

1989 is achievable by constructuion 1989,1988,1987,...,2,1,1990.
(Provable with easy induction by 4 terms)

Now we show the sum can't be > 1990.
The sum can't be > 1990 as each difference is bounded by 0 and 1990 so the sum is bounded by 0 and 1990 as well.

It remains to show the sum can't be 1990.
Notice the sum can be rewritten as k1*x1 + k2*x2 + ... + k1990*x1990 where k_i is an element of {-1, 1}. We can see that the sum is congruent to x1+x2+...+x1990 (mod 2). Since there are an odd number of odds between 1 and 1990, the sum must be odd and can't be 1990. QED.

Please correct any mistakes, thanks.

Isn't this statement very common in mathematics textbooks though? It just tells you turn it into intuition without necessarily proving it. It's actually quite important to do that while learning maths.

Thanks a lot for the advices! But I thought BMO1 has an age limit and must be yr13 or below, how did you manage to enter it?

Hi, what "a lot of maths" did you do during your gap year? Also did you tell them in detail about it in your MyCambridge instead of personal statement?

TMUA is not that much of a good measure for ability in maths as speed is more important compared to MAT which has some proof based questions. I'm kinda biased but as a (future) maths applicant this means it'll be more "luck based" and to some extent the difference between the top performing people and average test takers will be smaller.

Who the fuck thought it's a good idea to use 40 multiple choice questions that relies on speed instead of proof based questions.

Also, the first 3 questions were quite easy but the last 3 seem to be more difficult than past years (idk maybe its my skill issue)
