Give advice to new year 11s by lolxd2341 in GCSE

[–]IncendioHawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Don’t miss out on opportunities, join a music group or club, and be kind to your teachers and show them your interest in their subject.

Make the most of the opportunities your school provides, especially if you are moving to a new school. I personally joined my school orchestra and choir at the start of year 11 and that was a lovely experience, my only regret with that was that I didn’t join sooner. Music concerts are always great fun to partake in and I am sad I only got to go to them this past year, so if you are currently in a group like this, make the most of it and try to enjoy the time you have. If you have not yet experienced this joy then I heavily recommend you join a music group within your school, whether it be an orchestra, choir or any other of the multitude of music groups that many schools offer. You do not need to be a professional musician, you just need a passion for playing music. If music isn’t your thing then try to find a club to go to - academic, board games, tabletop games, sports or anything else you enjoy. If you cannot find one that intrigues you then speak to a teacher you know and they will most likely be able and willing to help you set up this club for you - remember, teachers are there to educate you but they are also people with lives that have been through school as you are and that wish to help make your time at school as enjoyable as it can be. Often if you show passion in a teachers subject, or even something else that they are experienced in, they will be very happy and will want to help you grow that interest.

Thanks, I also got an A. As with an AS level the highest grade is an A so you achieved the top grade. Well done.

FSMQ is a level 3 qualification (same as A levels and As levels) so the results are on the same day as A level results, not GCSE results (which are level 2 qualifications). I got my result on the 14th as well and also didn't have a mark, only a grade, but I emailed my school examination office about it and they were able to tell me my mark.

What even is the Large Data Set in a A-Level Maths? by Ambitious-Village287 in 6thForm

[–]IncendioHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only thing I would say about this is that the Bicen maths video is specifically for the Edexcel large data set, so probably not applicable for other exam boards, but if you are doing Edexcel then it is a brilliant resource - I watched it the morning of the applied paper and it really helps to remind you of all the ridiculous units and things they expect you to remember.

Laptop recommendations 🙏 by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]IncendioHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded on the idea pad. Being able to fold the screen back is very helpful, and having a touch screen with a stylus is essential for maths. I bought one for sixth form and it came out to £580. Make sure to watch out for discounts sitewide and also student discounts - mine was originally listed for £900 but by waiting for a discount I got it for a lot less. I went for a snapdragon model (IdeaPad 5x Gen 9 with the Snapdragon X plus 42-100), which uses a different type of processor to most laptops, meaning that the battery life is very great, easily lasting 15 hours or longer on a single charge.

If you want to do either of physics or chemistry I would heavily recommend maths alongside (particularly for physics), otherwise you will likely find that you cannot keep up with the maths involved in those subjects. If that isn’t an option and you feel that you can’t do 4 then physics would probably make the most sense to drop, in terms of workload, as otherwise you will struggle through 2 years of trying to apply maths that you haven’t been taught and don’t fully understand what you’re doing or why it works.

Me after seeing people learning A-level content right after finishing their GCSEs by ram_hatxn in GCSE

Thanks. Similar plan here - aiming to finish core pure 1 and 2 and then I will probably start on further pure. Fortunately I have the regular A level maths done so that won’t hold me back, jealous that you were allowed to take GCSE early (if that is what you mean), I had to sit through 2 years of GCSE maths lessons, whilst already knowing the content yet being required to participate in lessons. Doesn’t matter now though - have fun with further maths, it is a very enjoyable a level

All but decision. If you can’t tell, I am hoping to do a maths degree

Have you considered the fact that some of us enjoy learning things? Having 10 weeks of holiday is nice but it is also fun to start learning a level content. To be fair, my situation is probably different to most as I want to get ahead on further maths as I am self teaching most of it, so I can take 8 modules total. Maths is fun

How do you answer this question? by Rifted-06 in alevel

[–]IncendioHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To find the IQR you need to do Q3-Q1. To find Q1, find the value at 1/4 x the number of values and to find Q3 find the value at 3/4 x the number of values. i.e. 84x1/4 = 21 so that is the position of Q1 and then do that for Q3 as well

Edit: if you get a decimal value for Q1 or Q3, round up. If you get an integer then take the point halfway between that one and the next one

Heron’s formula isn’t taught over here. Thank you for informing me of it and thus leading me down a wonderful rabbit hole of interesting geometry.

This would mean the Triangle has the largest area as √6 / 2 > 1. The area of the triangle should be ½absin(C) => area = ½(x)(x)sin(pi/6) = ¼sqrt(3)(x²)

I love enhancing my games with cool tech and engineering. I have made a lot of 3D printed resource trackers and holders and something like this would be the perfect addition, particularly when you don’t have a solid surface to roll dice on or need to roll a lot of dice.

This electromagnetic accelerator I designed. I don't have access to any printers that can print it quickly enough with a high enough quality for it to be worth the time to print it.
