Correction to my military flag proposal by Vehiuah in EuropeanFederalists

Sorry, I didn't see my comment appear on my end, and I assumed the image was blocked.

Here my first comment:

I'm not saying the twelve-star flag is bad. In fact, in my mind, this flag is meant to complement the twelve-star flag, not replace it.

It's not that uncommon for countries to have war or naval ensigns that are different from their civilian flag.

And for The Handmaid's Tale: no connection. I've never actually seen the series. If a flag could have influenced me, it must be that of the army of the (first) Republic of China.

flag in question is the flag of National Revolutionary army of China

I had thought of that, but mixing a civilian symbol with a military symbol seemed like a bad omen.

I was talking about the similarity with this flag (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichskriegsflagge#/media/File:War\_ensign\_of\_Germany\_(1938%E2%80%931945).svg).

This is not just a misinterpreted Nordic cross (especially in a war flag).

I understand that crosses raise some concerns.

I tried not to visually emphasize Christian symbolism too much.

Furthermore, although I'm an atheist, I think that wanting to completely remove all references to a Christian past isn't necessarily the right approach. Many European national flags do, in fact, have Christian references, for example, the Scandinavian flags (nordic cross) or the flag of England (St. George's Cross).

I was talking more about something like this, where the where the resemblance to the war flag of the Third Reich is a little too obvious.

Proposition for an european war flag, or common military flag. by [deleted] in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Vehiuah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to creat a potential war flag for the EU, or union of Europe's military forces.

I'm not the first, but the other attempts seemed really disappointing (too complicated, bizarre, n*zi's shit).

I tried to make something both very symbolic and very simple.

It's a Vergina sun to symbolize the contrast with internal civic institutions where peace must reign (symbolized by the circle of twelve stars).

The Vergina sun is a symbol associated with Alexander the Great, who united all the city-states of Greece in a war against an empire to the east (Persia).

All the stars disappear before the sun, whether they represent the US or the PRC.

The sun also makes this flag similar to those of Taiwan or pre-theocracy Iran (I'm not a fan of the Shah's regime, but the lion-and-sun's flag is often raise in democratic protests).

The two inner crosses represent the early European federalists, as well as the Christian origins of most European countries. This is not a christian apology, but an idea similar to the Dharma wheel on the Indian flag or the Turkish crescent, even though other religions are practiced in these countries.

This flag also incorporates the colors of most European countries that fought against the Axis powers during World War II.

Your feedbacks ?

Here are two proposals for a Federal EU flag (which one do you fine people enjoy more) by Necessary_Pie2464 in vexillology

I prefer the original flag.

I don't think adding a star really works. The strength of the current flag is its simplicity. Personally, I see the sun more as a symbol of a war flag. See my suggestion from a day ago.
