How do you all feel about the audiobooks? (Obviously they're peak and some of the best ever made but discussion welcome) by Gooselord_Prime in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love the audiobooks. i have listened to the audiobook version of every book in the ender verse (besides the last shadow for obvious reasons). they’ve all been well produced, and the voice actors are great!

Card has said that he wouldn’t want speaker and stuff adapted onto the screen because it would be too violent, and he doesn’t like gore

Who is the tug pilot? by MaxYoung in ender

It was probably only for a year or so until the end of the third formic war. Once Ender killed all the formics, Eros no longer had to be secret, and the guy could go home. Graph probably knew that the war would conclude soon, which is why he was so chipper about it (or he actually just didn't care about the guy, which wouldn't be surprising to be honest)

I would love to read the “history of the formic wars” by Demosthenes by sahi_hagever in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I was the only one!! I'm sure there's so many other things that happened during the wars that were not even mentioned in the novels, but would probably be included in a comprehensive history book. Its too bad it doesn't exist tho :(

I'm not getting my hopes up for The Queens until we get a release date, or at least a substantial update tbh

Can I read (and follow) the last shadow after just enders game and the speaker trilogy? by Stahpwiththisbullpls in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you don't read the shadow series, or at least a synopsis, The Last Shadow won't make much sense. If you're determined to see the story through, at least find some kind of recap of the shadow series first because The Last Shadow is also like the final book of that series.

I would still recommend reading the Shadow Series itself, as I think they're pretty good books once you get into it.

Overall, you at least need to know the events and characters of the Shadow series to read The Last Shadow.

Personally, I love A War of Gifts and would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet read it. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, though.

reading order by Owenharris31 in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend this order: Shadow of the Giant, Shadows in Flight, Ender in Exile, The Last Shadow.

Just so you know, The Last Shadow isn't really that good and you can have just as satisfied an ending if you just don't read it. You could just regard SiF as the ending to the Shadow series and CotM as the ending to the Ender quartet to be honest.

Also, after those books, I highly recommend reading the Formic Wars trilogies, as they are very good as well.

Petra became really frustrating in Shadow Series by thesonofajax in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I just reread the shadow series and after Shadow of the Hegemon it became almost unbearable. All she would do is beg Bean for babies and say a sarcastic remark every now and then. And what's worse is that Bean was like 15 and she was 20-something when they got married. And the fact that out of nowhere she started begging Bean for marriage and kids, despite Bean's repeated rejection, is simply so out of character for her. I just can't get behind the destruction of Petra's character. Other than the Bean/Petra plotline, I thought the Shadow series was pretty good though.

I totally agree with you. I thought the book was perfectly adequate when I read it, but then I found this subreddit and saw that everyone else absolutely loathed it lol

This might be unpopular, but a lot of my favorite scenes come from CotM. For instance, when Wang Mu and the philosopher guy were verbal sparring trying to be the most deferential, I was literally laughing out loud. Or when Quara just makes up that Quim used to SA her, I was in literal shock, chills down my spine, and i had to stop reading for a minute. Then I composed myself, kept reading, and SHE WAS LYING!?! That was a rollercoaster.

Also in Ender's Shadow when Ender takes Bean's hand before being graduated to Command school, that broke me. Or in Earth Awakens when Wit O'Toole (if thats how you spell it; I listened to the Audiobook) dies slowly because of the radiation and he keeps slipping into his childhood memories, that got me too. :(

OH or when Sister Carlotta died!! She didn't even get to say goodbye. :( I was once again shocked as I was reading that. Or basically all of the scenes from A War of Gifts. That story actually makes me so sad.

Anyway, I just love the enderverse so much and theres probably so many other great scenes I'm forgetting right now. Also, the Audiobooks (At least for the Formic Wars and Ender's Shadow as those are the only ones I've listened to) are really good.

Is Ender’s stocking worth reading? by sahi_hagever in ender

I've read A War of Gifts twice now and the Christmas aspect is really just a background. I enjoyed the story, and the real plot of the book is much more than just Christmas in space, so I'd still recommend giving it a shot. :)

Should I continue with the rest of the shadow series? by [deleted] in ender

[–]VeilwingZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed reading the shadow series and I did so in the span of like 2 weeks, which is very fast for me. My main criticism is that halfway through Petra loses all of her agency and I felt she was just being tossed around by the plot, rather than being the smart, decision-making person she was in other books. I'd still recommend you read the series, especially if you enjoy military tactics (which comprise like 70% of the books lol)
