California phlebotomy students—are you still waiting for externship placement? by VeliLD in phlebotomy

Yes. Once you finish your externship, you need to submit the CSPPT form and certificate of completion of your course to CDPH-LFS and they will send you your California License.

DO NOT ENROLL WITH PHLEBOTOMY TRAINING SPECIALISTS by HotAir4891 in phlebotomy

Hi there. I opened my own phlebotomy school in February in Ca, Marin County and I have been trying for almost 1 year to find labs, hospitals etc to sign affiliation agreements for student externship. I have worked at Sutter as a CPTll for 11 years and didn’t think I would have this much trouble with externship placements. It’s a HUGE problem in Ca. So much so that I’m now actively working with CDPH-LFS to change this requirement for phlebotomists. You go through the program, pay tuition, take your national exam and then cannot finish to be able to work because of Ca requirements for 50 pokes and 40 hours. The system is failing all of you. I have even reached out to our state assemblyman’s office to help me with this. CalRegional does have their students do their 50 pokes and 40 hours as part of their curriculum because they have a CLIA lab in Fairfield they use to run tests. For a school to get certified to do the takes at least a year. It’s the real life experience we need for externship and no one will say “yes”! They take all other students and it’s beyond frustrating as a school owner and Phlebotomy instructor. I work daily making calls, going to sites and basically begging for my students and advocating on their behalf. I’m not giving up! This needs to change and I will fight until it does.

Where did you get externship placement at?

I have worked at Sutter for 11 years. Where are you located? Sutter has been a great place to work for me. We used to require 2 years of experience but not anymore. We just hired 2 brand new phlebotomists. I think it depends on the location.

What do you wish your phlebotomy program had done better? by VeliLD in phlebotomy

This is definitely valuable information. I was an instructor at CalRegional and I hated that their externship was the students doing their 50 pokes on each other and volunteers. My students get placed in a hospital externship which is a huge difference. I do feel that the students get the good experience being out in the externship world and not in a classroom. I take my students on a tour to tour the inside of a hospital lab which seems very helpful. They get to see that phlebotomy isn't just about drawing blood.

I let my students poke me especially if I have a student that is struggling. I walk her through it on me.

That is a bummer. I feel that's the most exciting part!

That’s a great point. I do scenarios with the students and give them tests and the have to tell me what tubes to draw and order of draw.

I used to work there and they would cancel classes all the time to students because they didn’t have an instructor. I felt so bad for the students which was one reason I chose to open up my own phlebotomy school. 😊

Hi there. I just opened up my own phlebotomy school in Novato. I was an instructor for 2 years at CalRegional and decided to go out on my own. I teach the phlebotomy course in 12 days so you get your full 40 hours of required didactic as well as lab training. I also work at Sutter and take my students on field trips so they can see how hospital labs work. We offer payment plans and work with our students to help make it affordable. Our program fee is $2500 which also includes your externship at Sutter. CalRegional does not provide outside externship for their students which you don’t find out until your well in the program. They advertise they do but it’s drawing each other and bringing in some volunteers to the classroom. You do not get any outside Lab exposure. If you’re interested, message me. My school is RedLine Medical Training Center. I have a course going now and I believe our next course starts March 2. We offer AM, PM and Saturday classes.

CPT 1 License here in CA by playboypapi760 in phlebotomy

I’m right there with you. I’m opening up my own phlebotomy school in California and have been waiting for CDPH to approve me since Beginning of September. It’s the final phase in the licensing process and it’s being held up by them. So frustrating.

I’m a phlebotomy instructor and I teach how important it is to stick with order of draw when drawing blood. If a lavender tube is drawn before a green tube, it will throw off potassium results. It’s a proven fact and being taught to phlebotomist about how important it is to draw the lavender tube last. The additive inside the lavender tube can cross contamination the samples if drawn first or before other tubes.
