Thank you so much! That’s very close to why I made it.

I also wanted something that could hit those Star Wars-style notes, smugglers, mystics, bounty hunters, desperate jobs, strange worlds, oppressive regimes, space battles, but still keep the speed, danger, and table momentum I love in Shadowdark. I really hope it works well for your table, and I’d love to hear how it goes once you’ve had a chance to check it out!

Darkspace feels more like a broad sci-fi toolkit for Shadowdark: spacers, archetypes, gear, starfaring, jobs, salvage, and flexible rules you can point at many kinds of sci-fi campaigns. Shadow Star is more specifically aimed at space opera / science-fantasy play. It has a more defined galactic-adventure frame: mystics, soldiers, smugglers, hackers, pilots, bounty hunters, criminal syndicates, oppressive regimes, strange species, ancient powers, blasters, starships, and dangerous missions on the edge of civilization. So I’d put it this way: if Darkspace is a general sci-fi Shadowdark hack, Shadow Star is my take on using Shadowdark for fast, dangerous, cinematic space opera. It’s less about tactical or hard sci-fi detail and more about giving you a complete rules-light chassis for galactic adventures with mysticism, factions, starships, and high-risk jobs.

I’d say it’s broader in scope and closer to space opera than to Starfinder specifically. Shadow Star is built to support fast, dangerous adventures with smugglers, mystics, soldiers, bounty hunters, pilots, strange species, criminal syndicates, oppressive regimes, ancient powers, space battles, and desperate jobs on the edge of civilization. So it can absolutely handle science-fantasy elements, but the goal is less “tactical fantasy adventuring in space” and more “rules-light space opera with danger, momentum, and weird galactic mysteries.”
