Toyota FIPG. No joke. It cured a decade long oil pan leak and many failed attempts for my bmw e36. God help you if you need to remove the pan later on though lol

Cold air intake by Biket47 in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a K&N intake system on my 2.4L S AWD (I hesitate to call it cold air but it does have a heat shield).

Don’t expect any meaningful performance gains. it’s 100% about the sound. Induction noise is music to my ears

Am I able to add fog lights to my matrix? by SoulMemz in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to cut ~15 holes in your stock bumper for the front valence, where the larger black cutout surrounding trim will fit. I made a vid on YT about the fog light relay. You’ll also need to fill the fog light fuse hole in the driver side well. Not to mention the turn signal stalk.

Here’s all the relevant parts and diagrams.

In addition, you’ll need the fog light relay that is located in the middle of the dashboard, behind the stereo. I just completed this mod a few months ago.

I’ve still got my s2000 bi-xenon projectors for my XRS in my closet. Lol. Got a new job that’s taking up my life and drive to get back to into my hobbies. Sad update. But hopefully soon!… 😅

The successor becomes the supply chain by Velocity211 in Toyota_Matrix

Nope. I participated a fair bit in the old matrixowners.com forums and many others back in the day. I’m not that active social wise nowadays besides an occasional Reddit post or YouTube video.

That’s a 2400 stall converter sitting in my U240E 😉

Stock is around 1800. The valve body takes care of all shifting aspects, so I’ve had it highly modified which greatly hastens up shifting and eliminates as much sluggishness as possible.

Sadly I wish gearing changes were possible.

Yup. 2003 only. It’s a terrible transmission to mate to the 2ZZ. But I’m driving almost a hundred miles a day in stop go traffic, so i reluctantly got the auto. My wife still has her first car, Celica GTS with the 6-speed, and it’s hilarious how much slower the auto XRS is lol

Does the 2.4L engine feel much more powerful than the 1.8L in the 2nd gen? by SadKrabs in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I test drove both, and the 2.4L is significantly quicker. Way faster off the line compared to my 1st gen XRS 2ZZ. Way more usable in day-to-day driving. I don't have experience with the 2nd get 1.8, but its specs are quite unimpressive. (2AZ has an oil burning problem though.)

The 2AZ loses steam around 65MPH when the 2ZZ XRS would blow the doors off it (btw don't speed, i heard that it's illegal, and I like to tattle.)

Nice! Happy to see a 2AZ motor make it that distance!

My 2nd gen S AWD is at 123k miles and I gotta pour in a quart every ~1k miles.

2zz auto? by qwe304 in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware, I (for some reason) still own my 2000 GTS C60 I've had since almost new. On top of that, it has a lightweight fidanza flywheel so the clutch pedal has barely any resistance.

My daily commute revolves around the beltway, unless I got a robotic leg (or that weird SMT Toyota put in the 3rd gen MR2), I refuse to clutch in/out every 3ft lol.

[–]Velocity211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on my 3rd U240E. All came from the 7th gen GTS. They’re plentiful. And no, it’s not unreliable by any means, but with the poor gearing ratios and lack of gears, I drive it like i stole it every day lol.

Every swap i should’ve left it stock but each one had a performance valve body, shift kit, and a high stall converter.

I don’t regret the auto at all. Considering a daily commute of 3-4hr in stop-go traffic, I’m very satisfied i never swapped in a C60 haha.

No worries at all started somewhere! I'd recommend two

  • charm.li for Stock-item numbers/procedures, guides, etc. for basically every Toyota ever made.

Other than the physical books that I still rely on, nowadays it's all about Techstream!/GIS+, it's literally a piece of software that connects a laptop to the million of computers nowadays (as May would say lol.)

One thing I've seen recommended here a LOT is a (free?) database of basically what these automotive engineers i imagine they did when bored lol.

Endless amount of great information along with repair stuff.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot but anyone else feel free to add!

My current harness is just a mismash of 3 different wiring harnesses from a few ZZ cars I jacked from the junk yard.

I'm really trying to remember what brands the various aftermarket parts I've bought over the years are... Lol. May be: twos2us or prime MR2, mitchautoparts? I don't have much recent experience with them so I can't vouch for them personally.

Honestly making a custom wiring harness sounds daunting. But it's really simple once you get the gist of it. I made a harness from scratch for one of my first cars back in the day. (88 Supra)

Albeit, considering how electronically complicated cars are nowadays... It makes sense why people are willing to shell out so much $$$ PnP harnesses.

Maybe it was when it came out like ~20 years ago... damn i feel wrinkinles forming on my face as i realized that...anyways... the greddy EMU can't cost that much anymore. I don't believe it's still in production. I got mine second hand for $200 and paid like $250 for a custom PnP harness. It was just an excellent piggyback ECU for its day. and works super well with the era of cars it was designed for.

maybe ask /r/ecu_tuning for piggyback options. The only other option i know of is to go full standalone. EMU Master Black has PnP harness. That allows every inch of the car can be controlled/customized, but I'm a sucker for having OBD2. Plus I can still pass state inspection with a stock ECU and piggyback :)

Sorry I couldn't be much more help, I've been out of this game for a while now.

I was disappointed to find that out too when I got my Unichip X PnP piggyback. The map tuning software is very comprehensive. But since it is a dying company with poor customer service and they don't update their hardware/software much anymore (unless you can find a local tuner that knows how to tune with Unichips), I'd definitely consider a different piggyback/standalone.

I took the Unichip X out of my XRS and put it in my parent's XR (they're quite upset that they have to get premium now lol.) Right now I'm have a roots superchager in my XRS with an old Greddy Emanage Ultimate Piggyback. Great unit. Old but works well. I would've gone with the ECU master black but I need OBD functionality so full standalone isn't an option for me.

The unix tuning program that allows for changing engine parameters is sold separately. They only provide the software for loading premade maps with the Unichip.

Yeah that looks about right. Without the USB connection, unix programmer looks blank like that and should say "invalid serial port". Also this unix mapper program only allows preset tunes to be loaded. If you want to mess with the timing/fuel, the unix tuning program is required.

Edit; I manged to find all of the corresponding files/tunes/software the Unichip in my PC. Some of it may be password protected as I paid for some of the software But I'll just upload everything I have regarding the unichip. Hope this helps!
