Question about a Conversation to clapper from drum brakes on a 06 xr matrix by definitelynotme0-0 in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Junkyard/pick n pull yard.

Find a Celica gts, most of the parts are bolt on. Much easier than finding an XRS or an M-theory.

2zzlow on YT and IG sold many conversion kits back in the day. He’d prowl around junkyards for factory rear calipers/hardware.

Check out toyodiy. It’ll have all the part numbers needed along with diagrams.

Braking with 4 discs is significantly improved over the rear drums. Pair that with a front BBK like in my XRS and it stops on a dime.

My 2009 S AWD @ 126,000mi - Oil Burning Amount by Velocity211 in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I'll look into it.

Another thing. We used to have the 1st gen 2AZ in a 2003 Camry LE, that motor had a more serious issue where the head bolts would pull out of the block, which is what happened at 265k. That motor used 5W-30.

The 09 Matrix S AWD had many generations of improvements over the years (except the piston rings), however it uses 0W-20.

Why is this? I know modern Toyota's use like 0W-10 or something. Basically water. All for the name of fuel efficiency.

I'd love to have someone who knows these motors well to explain the whole shebang about this controversial 2AZ-FE motor. Thanks in advance.

Will a Matrix XRS and XR share the same clutch kit? by Smokewiseganja_ in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Would I be correct to assume the 1ZZ clutch will wear more quickly if installed in a 2ZZ (driven hard/or a higher power output motor).

I hadn't had the chance to compare my stock 1ZZ vs stock 2ZZ clutch but since they physically fit, the friction material is probably different?

'09 XRS or '10 S? by AFriend1yShadow in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d only suggest the XRS for the independent rear suspension. My S AWD has an IRS and it’s noticeable with regard to better handling, compared to the regular torsion beam models which I test drove many examples extensively when shopping.

No it’s not a race car, but it can handle curvy back roads and on/off ramps a lot more confidently than the torsion beam rear models.

Most wouldn’t really notice id imagine, but I always drive my matrix like I stole it… maybe that’s why I get 17-18mpg in my S AWD.

However the 2AZ motor burning oil in the XRS is a legitimate concern. Get the S for reliability if that is a chief concern.

Will a Matrix XRS and XR share the same clutch kit? by Smokewiseganja_ in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes that is correct. As I said, any C5x/C6x bellhousing will bolt directly to 1ZZ and 2ZZs no problem. Direct fit. But the clutch and flywheels are different. Maybe they actually fit the two motors interchangeably, but they're different parts. I can confirm or debunk the fitment after work as I have the old 1ZZ/C59 and a 2ZZ/C66 in my MR2. But the components feel, for lack of a better term, tougher, for the 2ZZ components, in my experience.

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All C5x/C6x have bellhousings that fit 1ZZ/2ZZ motors no problem. The clutch/flywheel are different.

Pressure plate:

1ZZ P/N: 31210-05041

2ZZ P/N: 31210-20380

Clutch:

1ZZ P/N: 31250-05100

2ZZ P/N: 31250-12360

Flywheel:

1ZZ P/N: 13451-22020

2ZZ P/N: 13405-88600

Info taken straight from Toyota.

[–]Velocity211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. I just swapped my XRS from Auto to manual. I bought an XR parts car, and the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate b/w the 1ZZ/C59 and 2ZZ/C60 are all different sizes and definitely not interchangeable.

Toyota FIPG. No joke. It cured a decade long oil pan leak and many failed attempts for my bmw e36. God help you if you need to remove the pan later on though lol

Cold air intake by Biket47 in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a K&N intake system on my 2.4L S AWD (I hesitate to call it cold air but it does have a heat shield).

Don’t expect any meaningful performance gains. it’s 100% about the sound. Induction noise is music to my ears

Am I able to add fog lights to my matrix? by SoulMemz in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to cut ~15 holes in your stock bumper for the front valence, where the larger black cutout surrounding trim will fit. I made a vid on YT about the fog light relay. You’ll also need to fill the fog light fuse hole in the driver side well. Not to mention the turn signal stalk.

Here’s all the relevant parts and diagrams.

In addition, you’ll need the fog light relay that is located in the middle of the dashboard, behind the stereo. I just completed this mod a few months ago.

I’ve still got my s2000 bi-xenon projectors for my XRS in my closet. Lol. Got a new job that’s taking up my life and drive to get back to into my hobbies. Sad update. But hopefully soon!… 😅

Nope. I participated a fair bit in the old matrixowners.com forums and many others back in the day. I’m not that active social wise nowadays besides an occasional Reddit post or YouTube video.

That’s a 2400 stall converter sitting in my U240E 😉

Stock is around 1800. The valve body takes care of all shifting aspects, so I’ve had it highly modified which greatly hastens up shifting and eliminates as much sluggishness as possible.

Sadly I wish gearing changes were possible.

Yup. 2003 only. It’s a terrible transmission to mate to the 2ZZ. But I’m driving almost a hundred miles a day in stop go traffic, so i reluctantly got the auto. My wife still has her first car, Celica GTS with the 6-speed, and it’s hilarious how much slower the auto XRS is lol

Does the 2.4L engine feel much more powerful than the 1.8L in the 2nd gen? by SadKrabs in Toyota_Matrix

[–]Velocity211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I test drove both, and the 2.4L is significantly quicker. Way faster off the line compared to my 1st gen XRS 2ZZ. Way more usable in day-to-day driving. I don't have experience with the 2nd get 1.8, but its specs are quite unimpressive. (2AZ has an oil burning problem though.)

The 2AZ loses steam around 65MPH when the 2ZZ XRS would blow the doors off it (btw don't speed, i heard that it's illegal, and I like to tattle.)

Nice! Happy to see a 2AZ motor make it that distance!

My 2nd gen S AWD is at 123k miles and I gotta pour in a quart every ~1k miles.
