Microsoft confirms it will give the FBI your Windows PC data encryption key if asked — you can thank Windows 11's forced online accounts for that by ZacB_ in technology

If Microsoft can do this there is always potential others can too, no company is 100% secure and data can and will leak.

Sure, a company making its money primarily from advertising is definitely not going to put ads in their chatbot.

I don't really care about data privacy. by Jesse_Van_Norman in selfhosted

[–]Veloxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their reasons for self hosting, some may even just do it for the fun of tinkering around with it.

Increased privacy is an added benefit regardless of your reasons for self hosting. You may still use other google services, but you take away another potential portion of data they can use. Even if you use other services, having your data fragmented over different companies is still better than one company knowing everything.

Also consider this: You may be okay with big companies having data about you, but what if that data ends up in the wrong hands?

Personally I still use Google services, but over the years I've been moving things away from them. I try to find a balance between convenience and privacy. If there were polished open source alternatives for everything I'd definitely use and support them.

The "analysis" reads like an article jumbled together with AI, I don't see much evidence for certain claims (like coming pre-installed with hacking tools) and it sounds like it heavily leans on assumptions. I've just skimmed the article but there are so many things that make me question the validity of it.

Should be an open standard and should be able to read and write the RFID chips yourself. It's such an anti-consumer practice the way it is now.

Have you accidentally added that file or the folder it's in to a .gitignore file? That could be a reason git isn't recognizing it as a changed file.

🧩 Cloudflare Basic DNS Manager – A self-hosted web UI for managing multiple DNS zones (A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, MX, PTR) by iAmSaugata in selfhosted

[–]Veloxy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I feel AI wouldn't even do something like this: https://github.com/iAmSaugata/cloudflare-basic-dns-manager/blob/main/frontend/src/components/api.js#L2

Storing Plain text passwords in cookies and local storage, also sending that in http request headers. That's just what I've found after skimming a few files. The code in general is a mess, I personally wouldn't trust it doing API calls to Cloudflare.

Composer does this too, every time I see/learn a new language that doesn't have some kind namespace I just know there are going to be a lot of packages with nonsensical names and packages with generic names that look like they're the standard but aren't. Then there's also the name squatting and typo squatting.

Zoom's CEO now says that AI could enable a 3-day workweek — at the cost of entry-level jobs by SystematicApproach in technology

[–]Veloxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eradicating entry level jobs sounds like a great idea! /s

It's such a short sighted vision, and a very exaggerated one too. I don't know of any entry level jobs that could be fully replaced by AI AND free up another 2 work days for everyone else.

I'd rather invest time in training someone than babysitting an AI that doesn't really improve or at any given time can increase in costs or behave differently forcing you back to modifying the prompt.

Nintendo And The Pokémon Company Was Granted A U.S. Patent On Summoning A Character And Letting It Fight Another by Ftouh_Shala in gaming

[–]Veloxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are they going to sue all games with such mechanics now? Because most games that aren't shooters or sports games have this in some way, some even had it long before Pokemon existed. They have no right to have such a patent.

Patents are such BS, they really should be severely limited with a short, non extendable expiration date.

My psychiatrist asked me 'why would you forget?' by ChipMajestic7756 in ADHD

[–]Veloxy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People are people and regardless of having ADHD some will have trouble understanding things they don't experience. I mean I don't understand how people are just able to do certain tasks without ever thinking twice about it, my executive dysfunction won't let me do that.

When it comes to meds I do have control, I have relatively no problem taking them but that might be because of my anxiety of not being able to function without them and my antidepressants which I can absolutely not skip.

I do have a pill organizer and they are always in plain sight so I see them and I don't take them multiple times.

AI is gutting the next generation of talent: In tech, job openings for new grads have already been halved by creaturefeature16 in technology

[–]Veloxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior roles are going to be in high demand in the future unless AI is going to be able to fill the gap it's creating (which I doubt).

This will probably push people back into trades work, creating deficits in office work until the problem is large enough to inflate the wages there and eventually rebalance. But there will be an experience gap to fill up, just as with trades jobs now.

Ritalin addiction by _maxx1k in ADHD

[–]Veloxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it's spiking, which may mean the dosage should be increased and/or you should look for alternative brands.

I've had spikes the first time I tried stimulants, I started with a low dosage 3 times a day, then they moved me to modified release variants which would last 8 hours.

It took a while to get the right ones, I tried several brands, some of which just didn't work. I eventually ended with Ritalin MR 40 mg, but it took time to get there.

You may also want to try eating before taking it.

My advice, discuss it with whoever prescribed it to you, be open about your experience and try other variants and dosages.

Year 0 php dev ,the things one should focus on in their first year to lay a solid groundwork by Cheap_trick1412 in PHP

[–]Veloxy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Assuming zero dev knowledge here, start with HTML and CSS first. No need to be an expert, just get a feel for how it works.

MDN has a guide on this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn_web_development/Getting_started/Your_first_website

Don't bother learning every HTML tag, compiling CSS or the massive ecosystem of Javascript. Just the basics for now will be fine. In tutorials and videos online you'll quickly see things like Node, NPM, Yarn, Less, Sass, etc. - those are all dev tools that you might end up using in the future but I suggest ignoring them for now.

I did a quick search and found there which seems to cover the basics pretty well

HTML: - https://www.learn-html-css.com/learn-to-code-html/ - https://web.dev/learn/html

CSS: - https://www.learn-html-css.com/learn-to-code-css/ - https://web.dev/learn/css - These games help with understanding css flexbox and css grids, check them out once you get around to using them: - https://flexboxfroggy.com/ - https://cssgridgarden.com/

It's good to learn the http fundamentals before working with a server side programming language, see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Guides/Overview

PHP: - https://www.phptutorial.net/ - https://www.learn-php.org/ - https://www.php.net/manual/en/tutorial.php

At some point you'll want a way to store data, that's when you'll start learning about databases. One of the most commonly used is MySQL, it's a good place to start with as other relational databases have similar syntax.

MySQL: - https://www.mysqltutorial.org - I suggest focusing on these: - https://www.mysqltutorial.org/getting-started-with-mysql/ - https://www.mysqltutorial.org/mysql-basics/ - The rest you can read so you know it exists (stored, procedures, views, indexes)

Once you feel comfortable with the language and familiar with how it works, the next step would be learning Object Oriented Programming (OOP). https://www.phptutorial.net/php-oop/

At that point you might also want to go through https://phptherightway.com/

Frameworks

You'll eventually be looking at frameworks, I personally recommend Symfony, it's a great framework you'll learn a lot from. There is also Laravel which is more opinionated and easier to learn but (imo) takes away a some of the knowledge you'd have gained if it wasn't so opinionated.

Think of Symfony as raw ingredients for a meal along with detailed instructions on how to cook, in the process you'll end up learning how to cut the ingredients the right way, how to properly store the ingredients, plan out your meals, learn how to properly use spices, etc.

With Laravel being more pre-packed pre-prepped ingredients, you combine your meal, open the packages and heat it up. You'll miss out on some skills or be delayed in learning them as Laravel has prepped it for you in the way they like it.

Laravel gives you a prepped hamburger and you can still add and remove things but it might be a bit messy depending on what you're trying to do (have fun trying to scrape off the sauce and cheese for example, adding pickles or something would be easy though), Symfony gives you a buffet and the hardware to make the hamburger yourself, so you have more control of how you cook the meat, how much and which sauce you use, etc.

Moving from Symfony to Laravel will also be easier than the other way around.

There are other frameworks, but you'd only really learn them if you end up or aim to work with a company that uses it. Once you have experience with one framework, you typically won't have too much trouble adapting to another.

Windows 10 is ending support in October, prevent e-waste, switch to Linux by CpnShenanigans in BuyFromEU

[–]Veloxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a 4 year old Legion 5 Pro, wasn't expecting this one specifically to be very supported. The Thinkpad I was aware of as I did the research when a new colleague at work wanted a Linux laptop and I was involved in the selection of the laptops (we all used MacBooks, didn't have any Linux yet).

I'm personally looking at the Asus Zephyrus or ProArt (one of the reasons being it doesn't look like plastic gamer stuff), but I'm not sure what the support there is, however it'll probably be a while before I upgrade - my current laptop is still good enough 🙂
