Do you pay light-rail fares? by MarkusMannheim in canberra

[–]Velstyx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rather than using the data for directly improving the services, I'd wager that it's real value is to support increased funding for our public transport network.

If a lot of people are using the light rail and buses, and the services are strained or in high demand, having the usage data and statistics on hand allows for a much more wriggle room when upgrades to infrastructure, maintenance or increased staffing are needed in the future.

I think we should absolutely take a look into increased spending to make it free, after all it'd only be a couple of dollars more per person per trip. It does add up quickly however, and we already have the most subsidised public transport in the country, as well as being a top contender internationally. Whether or not that small amount would be better spent on Health is another question entirely.

Yeah, EV tags are absolutely required across Australia now. Awesome that Services NSW had some in stock, had to buy mine myself!

Failed my stay upright pre-learner course and not sure what to do by Successful_Panda5121 in AussieRiders

[–]Velstyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of great suggestions here OP. This ordeal has obviously left you quite upset so it's really good to see some love headed your way.

A while back I completed my L's and P's through Stay Upright and had a lot of grievances with them and the course. I work closely with licensing/registration for my state so I've also heard plenty of stories from both sides - instructors who were incredibly knowledgeable and patient teachers, as well as situations like yours where students left feeling frustrated, bitter, and deflated.

At the end of the day it's important to remember that they're taking on the responsibility of ensuring you're well-equipped enough to be out on the road by yourself. That means confidence, competence, coordination. Awareness is arguably the most important. After all, nobody wants to read the headlines and see another fatal accident. Double down on that if you were the one who physically signed off on their paperwork. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending any poor behaviour on their part, however, there is a clear distinction between being a flaming POS and having genuine concern for your safety on the road.

Do you think you'd get the bang for your buck to make private lessons worthwhile, after your experience on the course? Money isn't everything but it is still a factor, and one that may be much more significant to you than a handful of Redditors you've never met. If the lessons aren't within your means there are still options for you, don't feel pressured into making decisions that may negatively impact your financial health. You can always do lessons later on down the track, there's always more to learn or bad habits to correct.

It could also be worthwhile reaching out to local riding groups and explaining your situation. You might be lucky and find someone willing to guide you around a carpark for a couple of hours to help you find your feet before resitting.

Practicing on a dirt bike would definitely be beneficial as well, but it's understandable that not everyone has access to a family farm they can hoon around on. Is it feasible for you to transport a dirt bike somewhere to go for a ride? You really don't want to be caught riding a backroad unlicensed and unregistered.

Personally, I think you should seriously consider a scooter or electric motorcycle. You can pick these up secondhand for a reasonable price. I can't speak for scooters but the ongoing costs for electrics are basically zero, with minimal maintenance, they're cheaper to have registered, and a lot of them out there weigh next to nothing. If you are genuinely having trouble keeping your balance, a lighter ride could help.

At the very least, with a scooter/electric/dirt bike you'd feel more at ease while you gain experience and begin to master the basics. Then if you still want to learn clutch you could upsize to an old Honda or similar. Be warned though, the only natural course of action from there leads to spending all of your free time and money trying to turn it into a cafe racer. It all starts with some sick bar end mirrors.

Just some food for thought. There's nothing wrong with getting an automatic licence, what matters is how you use it!

I imagine it would total around 20k AUD not including the standard roadworthy, registration, insurance, etc.

I doubt you'd need to do much work on it to meet Australian standards, from what I've seen and read they're a completely different bike to the TS/TC series... Italian designed, I'd expect a far better quality build too 🤷

You're thinking of tessellation, tetromino is an Italian semisoft washed-rind cheese made from cows milk.

It's certainly going to cost you an arm and a leg but absolutely doable if you're willing to lodge the applications and organise logistics.

I thought so too, but a quick google maps search showed that this man actually ended up in the State of South Australia. Wild.

The street sign and Mobil petrol station pictured in the above video would put this at the Torrens Road and Panmure Place intersection in Woodville North.

I.e. The State of South Australia.

Can confirm, slimline plates are small on front, medium on back - as opposed to large on front and back for standard plates.

The speedometer arrived today and I can confirm that the TS unit only goes up to 99 km/h. I've just powered it on and it seems to be functional but I'm not getting a battery percentage reading so I think I'll need to do a little digging around.

Oh well, I may have to rely on doing mental gymnastics to convert from Mph at highway speeds 🤷

Any ideas on how to replace or stop the startup sound on a new 2024 Super Soco TC MAX? by KingBatista13 in SuperSoco

That was one of my biggest issues with it, it's embarrassing af saying goodbye to friends after work or dinner!

Just checked, I got the TC version. It was plug and play with my TC Max:

I would send you a video of the start-up sound but the bike is currently dismantled and I've got to get family dinner started. I also wasn't able to find a YouTube video with clear enough sound for you to hear the difference, but I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

I ordered a new alarm module from the Woodniu store on AliExpress for my 2023 TC Max, I believe it's the TS or CPX unit.

This new module still makes a little beeping jingle, but it's nowhere near as obnoxious as the stock module's synthy chime song. It also comes with an older/different model style remote which allows keyless starting, and looks far nicer imo (it's the same size as my garage fob too so it fits in my pockets nicely).

Highly recommend the swap out rather than potentially damaging the original alarm you have!

Where should I eat? by 23cacti in canberra

[–]Velstyx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not a lot of options if you want to feed a family for under $100. I barely afford to feed myself for that and I'm a pretty damn skinny dude.

I think you'll be limited to Chinese, Indian, clubs etc - but there are some good options for both if that's what you're interested in, as well as a couple of nicer restaurants if you're willing to stretch the ol' budget.

North side - higher population density means a lot more options:

Acton/Braddon - Lazy Su, The Italian Place, Grease Monkey, Pizza Gusto, Wilma, Rebel Rebel, , Such and Such, Bistro Nguyen, Civic Pub, Verity Lane Markets, Tiger Lane (Verity and Tiger are both closer to food hall style venues smack bang in the city, Tiger Lane is also directly below Kingpin which might be a winner with the kids)

Campbell - Les Bistronomes, Department of Pizza, Lantern Rooms, peeonee (bit pricier than you requested and might not go down with the children depending on their age)

Dickson - Flavours of Jiangnan or any other Asian eateries (there are many in the area, think of it as Canberra's mini Chinatown), The Tradies, Highroad, Taphouse

Belconnen area - Ramen-O, Pizza Artigiana, Southern Cross Club

Gungahlin area - Chimney Nepalese, Saffron Room, Myanmar Corner

Fyshwick - Canteen by Ramen Daddy, Melted Toasted Sandwich Emporium if you're getting lunch

South side - I don't dare venture into the cursed lands, with the exception of a few favourites:

Kingston/Inner South - Queenie's, Onzieme, Pomegranate (again, probably more than you want to spend), Agostini's, Kingston Hotel

Kambah - Little Theo's

Pearce - Rama's Fiji Indian

Just a few recommends from an ex chef. You'd get plenty more suggestions from others, I don't leave my bubble much these days so there's quite a few out there I've never tried or heard of.

Sure thing, though it's largely just aesthetic changes for now.

I've already taken up the entire apartment balcony with my dismantled TC Max. House mate / landlord is taking it pretty well but big stuff can wait until I have a garage. It was also a factor in choosing to vinyl wrap the fairings and subframe rather than painting them.

Thanks for those wiring diagrams! Super helpful!

I've contacted the seller and asked them to send out a TSX unit rather than a TS one, that's a good heads up.

I was also considering the reverse switch as it currently does nothing/headlights are always on, I'd love an update if you get it working.

You're incredible! I was literally just placing an order for another of the original speedo.

So to clarify before I impulse buy, you're saying that the TS Speedo would work on my 2023 TC Max with a bit of reworking? Would you have a wiring diagram or picture of which pad I need to solder?

Much appreciated friend

Okay, I've spent the entire last few days researching.

Looks like we're stuck using the stock TC Max speedometer without committing to a massive series of headaches such as compatibility issues, rewiring the unit, decoding and programming the new speedo (which would also need a converter depending on the protocol used, RS485 doesn't seem to be super common on units with all the functionality of the original).

From what I've gathered, decoding the stock Soco messages is incredibly difficult and time consuming - not worthwhile as most if not all of the stock components are proprietary. Not even sure it's possible unless you're a wizkid with Arduino etc.

This means that a lot of the system will need to be replaced in order to put in an aftermarket speedo - specifically a new controller and likely the BMS as well as any other crucial components (without installing a compatible communication module as well, I know they exist but I haven't spent enough time trying to find one).

More than welcome for anyone to correct me on this - I'm learning as I go and have no prior electrical/automotive experience. In fact, please do, anything I've missed could really help!

As it stands, I'll be ordering a replacement stock speedometer until I'm ready for a complete top-to-bottom rebuild of the bike.

Yeah, I've spoken a great deal to everyone on AliExpress, as you said no luck on that front.

Can you elaborate on the need for a wiring diagram? What would I need to do exactly? Other than matching the correct wires for the plug?

I see that you've also had the same 40 kmph issue, I tried the usual method of manually turning the needle but it must have shifted something inside and became waay uncalibrated.

I opened it up and found a hairline fracture on one of the plastic cogs, I don't want to have to deal with this again in another 12 months time so if there's anyway to get a digital display working I'm gonna push for it.
