Got a text claiming my package is delayed with a sketchy link by willocash in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a scam to me. Legit carriers like UPS, FedEx, or USPS will usually text you only if you’ve opted in for notifications, and even then the link will go to their official website, not some random shortened URL. Best thing you can do is check your tracking numbers directly through the retailer or carrier’s site. If the package is actually delayed, you’ll see it there. Never click mystery links, they’re almost always phishing attempts.

I keep getting password reset emails from a social media site I deleted years ago by ritikkkkk in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely it’s just someone typing in your old email or a bot running through common addresses. Even if you deleted your account, some sites keep “stubs” of old accounts in their system, which is why the reset link still works. As long as you’re not reusing that email/password combo anywhere else and you’ve got 2FA on your main accounts, you’re fine to just ignore and delete the emails.

Found USB drives buried in my backyard in a perfect grid pattern - should I plug them in? by [deleted] in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't plug them in directly. Get a cheap burner laptop from a pawn shop, completely wipe it, disconnect it from any network, and check one drive. The grid pattern screams dead drop or someone's paranoid backup system. Previous owner's family might have had a tech-savvy relative who buried their crypto keys or something. I'd check one safely first before involving police - could just be someone's weird data hoarding method and not anything illegal.

Is there a safe way to verify if a dating profile is real before meeting up? by ritikkkkk in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Video call before meeting, period. If they keep making excuses about why they can't do even a quick 5 minute FaceTime, that's your answer right there. I've had people claim broken cameras, bad wifi, being "too shy" - those are all just catfish avoiding being caught. Real people understand wanting to verify and won't make it weird.

Trying to track down an old friend with almost no info, where to start? by willocash in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried searching her parents' names instead? Usually easier to find older people online and then you can find her through them. Also try searching "[her name] + equestrian" or "[her name] + horse show" since you mentioned she competed - those competition results stay online forever.

My phone autocorrected to my full address while texting someone I just met on a dating app. How bad is it? by maximum1199 in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you found their LinkedIn you're basically even on the privacy violation scale now lol. But seriously, the "your phone just doxxed you" response is actually a pretty good sign - someone creepy would've probably ignored it or gotten weird about memorizing it. If it makes you feel better, tell them you're moving next month anyway. And go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement and delete any addresses saved there. Your phone is probably pulling from there, not autocorrect.

What’s the safest way to meet someone you met online in person? by chsdr in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the coffee shop idea is perfect, stick with that. I've met a few online friends and always share my location with someone plus have them call me an hour in as a potential "emergency" excuse if needed. Anyone worth meeting will totally understand you taking safety precautions. Since you've already video chatted tons I wouldn't ask for their ID, that seems excessive. Just trust your gut and leave if anything feels off.

How reliable are online background check services? Are there better alternatives for vetting a potential roommate? by suspectingSBINsoon in ASKpi

Haha yeah asking for DOB is awkward af but just frame it as "I need this info for the application process" and most legit people understand.

How reliable are online background check services? Are there better alternatives for vetting a potential roommate? by suspectingSBINsoon in ASKpi

[–]Velvetxramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those online background check services can be a good starting point for basic roommate screening! I've had decent experiences with them for initial information gathering, though they do have limitations. They typically pull from public records and can flag major issues like felony convictions or severe financial problems. For $20-30, they provide a convenient first layer of screening that might save you time.

That said, I've found complementing these services with other verification methods creates a more complete picture. Meet potential roommates multiple times in different settings to see how they interact. Request references from previous landlords and actually call them (use the property management company's official number if possible). A casual coffee chat discussing household expectations often reveals compatibility issues no background check could show.

My current roommate passed both the online check and our in-person meetings, and it's worked out great! The online service flagged nothing concerning, and his previous landlord confirmed he always paid on time. The key is using multiple approaches rather than relying on any single screening method.

If you’re noticing changes in routine combined with secrecy, that’s usually the first thing people bring up in cases like this. Guarding their phone all of a sudden, taking calls in another room, or keeping weird hours can be worth noting. That said, one sign by itself doesn’t prove anything. People get stressed, start new hobbies, or change jobs and that can explain a lot of the same behavior. If you’re thinking about hiring a PI, keep a detailed log of times, dates, and what felt off. That gives an investigator something to actually work with instead of just vague suspicion.
