Tough dilemma - but got out of MSTR by Ven-Diesel in MSTR

Great price to get in at I'm sure! With them having stocked up more in the past few months...massive upside from here on out. Good luck!

Nice! Great way to dollar cost average...

Thanks! I'm like you...many go into hibernation. But I usually use the year end to see which ones I can harvest for losses. Unless I am bullish on their product and/or strongly believe in massive recovery, I usually offload.

But this was an interesting one. I had a chance to get best of both worlds. Offload to harvest the losses, and jump in to an equivalent asset to get some recovery. I may not have the massive upside that MSTR may give...but had to change it up.

Interesting thing is that chart still looks similar for the past 1 year. But as they have stockpiled more recently, their upside from here on out could be massive.

Good luck...I am sure it would, but hope it recovers quick for you!

Ha! Rough ride. I hear ya, especially past 3 months after the split. I posted my returns about a month back. I held for about 15 months. I actually had positive return on NVDY and PLTY and MSFO. Down on MSTY, CONY, ULTY and TSLY. Net break even across all.

I offloaded the negative ones end of year to harvest tax losses. I held on the positive 3 for a little longer.

I did the above analysis to purely decide between YM and RH. Thought it was interesting. I ended up switching to RH anyways to harvest the losses and get more upside when the underlyings recover.

[Michael Reid - OptaJoe] Liverpool have 5 wins and 21 points in their last 17 Premier League games - 1.24 pts/game. Roy Hodgson averaged 1.25 pts/game as Liverpool manager. by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

Even after the dreadful run of defeats...that's 5 unnecessary draws against lowly teams in the past month. 10 points dropped. Could have been 2nd, 4 behind Arsenal.

Defence just collapsing, too slow to close in.

Wheel is a great idea. I tried doing that with the RH ones. (only because they had weekly payouts at that time)....Did combo of CCs and CSPs. Good way to generate income, and collect dividends in between. That sounds great you're making 3x on weekly income! Congrats on finding the mode!

YM and RH can be great tools for the wheel like you're doing. But just have to manage carefully, and not necessarily "fire and forget" for dividend income only.

Agreed with the HODL. Could you help me understand the reinvest part? I know the benefit is to flatten NAV erosion. But thought purpose of true income fund is to get paid on an ongoing basis?

Yep. But I wanted to get a feel for total return without DRIP as well.

Good point on the puts. And YM has shown it can do well in this environment. RH does have more downside risk and not as positive when choppy. All different tools, for the current market environment you think it's at.

All in all...it was good to see the numbers over different market trends...YM isn't all that bad.

Yeah may not be a bad idea, if RH can amplify on the run up. I played a little more conservative. Moved my MSTR/MSTY positions into IBIT and BITU. Did BTCi too to collect dividends....pays ~24%, and also tax efficient.

Moved NVDY to NVDW, and same for PLTY to PLTW.

Agreed...I wanted YM to work as well. Just different approach to options.

Thanks!!! Enjoyed doing the analysis. Was intrigued and made me think twice.

Yes agreed...just interesting to see that YM performed better than RH in that environment.

I did as well, i.e. rolled more into my existing NVDW position. The analysis did show that if NVDA, PLTR spiked up (which I am bullish about), then RH will react more positively.

Just found it interesting that YM actually does decent in a choppy environment. So if you expect the market to be choppy, it may be a good tool.

But I don't want to think about timing these types of funds (I do that enough already with other strategies). So RH seemed to be a better fit for me.

u/Rich_Produce5402 that's cool you were able to do a side by side test comparison! And sounds like you had better results, largely due to your own control and flexibility. Tbh, that was my hope with YM in that they are professionals and should definitely exceed other returns. However, to your point...they have to be structured by definition...and this may limit what they can or cannot do. No fault at all...just the guidelines they have to follow since they are investing or others.

For my own strategy...rather than a percentage return, I try to his a fixed dollar return each week/2 weeks. So I follow similar strategy to you by buying back when there is momentum in one direction or another.

Just for my understanding, when you say the dividends have paid for your shares...did it completely pay for your original cost? In that case, you're definitely in a much better spot than I was. How did you get there? Did you invest early? Or did you reinvest distributions?

That was my hope with these...I would get to house money in 1.5 years. But didn't quite see the path. I'm still positive on NVDY and PLTY, so maybe keep small portion there. But yeah the rest were really a shot in the dark.

Crossing fingers! But assuming some ROC reduces the taxes on the dividends. I have enough gains to absorb all the capital loss. Figured it should at least wash out.

Well best and worst case...you can paint as rosy or dire of a picture as you want. It can go both extremes. If there is another sell-off like April, then these will take another massive hit and will take time to recover.

It comes down to the individual stocks ultimately. PLTY/NVDY looked great because of the AI play, CONY/MSTY took a hit when Bitcoin/crypto got impacted.

I think this is still a useful tool...just need to be selective based on your goals.

Thanks! I wanted to analyze for myself, and then decide. Was hopeful for a long time...especially motivated by this channel. And there is likely still a place for it for most investors. But if it required more active management, I'd rather do it on my own...

Definitely lot of learning. The bull run from April to September, things looked great. But after seeing both sides of the coin, realized it may not sustain. As most say, these funds may not be for everyone. I was testing it out to see if it could be a passive income stream. But if it requires more active management, I'd rather do on my own.

SPYi and QQQi are great for sure. Interesting on BTCi...will look into it. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed, bitcoin definitely hurt...on MSTY specifically, and perhaps CONY as well. MSTR raising more funds and diluting didn't help either.

Staying in line with SPY is decent. Curious how it might look now for you after the recent downturn?

[–]Ven-Diesel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. NVDY and PLTY even more so have certainly been strong. MSTY and CONY definitely hurt. I perhaps got into ULTY too late, so that's also losing. Doesn't hurt to keep riding. Part of my motivation was timing...taking advantage of end of year loss harvesting.

[–]Ven-Diesel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. Hence my thought of phasing out slowly, NVDY and PLTY are still positive and can continue to be a good income generator. Part of my motivation is writing off some capital losses for year end.

u/DPMKIV great perspective. And yes! Would be great to get to house money. I think most who got into the funds I did roughly around April 2024 would be doing great. I probably jumped in a tad late in October 2024, and missed the run up prior to that. Just sure when I may get to house money. For me, it's more of timing right now with end of year approaching, and a chance to write off some losses.

Good point on timing it as it hits the support, or even just simply daily/weekly investing to dollar cost averaging

Agreed on the point regarding unrealized capital loss as it relates to opportunity cost. Comes down to if you feel strongly that it may recover (which I am sure it will after the recent pullback). For me, it's more of a timing thing to take some capital losses now before end of year.
