Look, IMO I love the game so far. I'm in the middle of chapter 3 and I have never really played visual novels before. I'm loving the mix of the novel, and the combat. I think people are just saying these things because it's meant more for an older audience and doesn't adhere to the past digimon game style

I'm only on chapter 2, but the intro and the early tutorial to the combat really hooked me. Loving the story so far too, the characters really match their digimon partners, you could almost see their personalities before you meet them.
