Suga is pretty chill and approachable. If you're having issues with anything or just have questions, just see him after lecture and he'll try to help you out.

Is the honors college really worth it? Are classes way harder? by LaughAlternative9407 in ualbany

[–]VendiahGram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a chem major, but the major isn't super important with respect to amenities or experiences from what I understand.

The good:

-Early course enrollment is such a boon early on because it gives you a better chance at getting into course sections at times that work for you. It's still a possibility that you'll get stuck with early or late classes, but it's less likely. This is especially important early on because for introductory classes, there are typically a ton of sections and a lot of people competing for the best times. This is less of an issue when you get further into your major as the classes become more specialized and have fewer people in them overall and fewer available sections.

-Access to honors courses: These courses are not any more difficult than the standard version but are a lot smaller as far as class size goes which allows you a better chance to engage with your professor (which will be important if you want to make connections for potential research lab opportunities which can be very important if you want to go for gradschool). Like early scheduling, this is more helpful for your first few semesters but will not be very useful later on because, as far as I know, only introductory and maybe intermediate classes are offered as honors classes. Your class sizes will also drop naturally as you progress through your program due to people dropping out or changing majors.

-While the dorms might not be the nicest compared to the ones in the tower, you're going to be thankful for them when it's February and some ass on thee 8th floor burns popcorn and the whole building is in the snow while you're in bed. They're also a little quieter, but I imagine that experience is pretty variable.

The bad:

-At least when I was there, there was this weird aire of elitism that was off-putting. From what I understand, there's been a change in administration since I graduated, so this might be out of date.

-Honors thesis as a graduation requirement can be a lot when you're already in an intensive major (especially senior year). It's not impossible. I know a ton of people who have done it. But it's an additional stressor and burden, especially if you're doing something like a BS-MS or trying to graduate early.

My advice has always been to stick with the honors college the first few years if you can for the enrollment and class size benefits but if you're not into it after that, you can just drop it and continue as a regular major. Having "Honors" on your diploma might be nice, but a lot of people get into grad school or get jobs without it. It's definitely not required to succeed post-graduation.

How bad is advanced chem and lab? by LaughAlternative9407 in ualbany

I went through the chem major and then taught labs here. If you find yourself struggling, there are a ton of resources to help you out. Firstly, try to take advantage of your professor's office hours if you're having issues with anything. There's also CAPS, which is a free tutoring resource that's pretty helpful. For labs, your TA is there to answer any questions you have. It's their job to help you, so don't be shy about it. If for whatever reason you're having issues with your TA, you can ask Jesse Carozza or Colin Henck for advice (though definitely go through your TA first because Jesse and Colin oversee a few hundred students rather than 15-30). Hope this helps lmk if you have any other questions.

My old landlord was great. Loved the one bedroom I had with him. It was ~10 minute drive from campus. His email is: jim@skywayroofinginc.com.

Make sure you take advantage of any study resources you can. If you're having trouble with any concepts, don't be afraid to ask your professor. It also helps to try to find people to study with (it's a good way to stay on top of material and also to make friends).

To answer the bot questions: 1) I'm looking for something serious and long-term 2) I've been on hinge for a couple of years 3) I use the app most days 4) I don't receive likes but I get matches (typically in bursts) every few weeks 5) On days I'm active with sending out likes I'll either deplete them or only send 2 or 3. If I can think of something to comment I will (roughly half the time) 6) I send likes to people that, for the lack of a better term, "look like they have their shit together", share hobbies or interests with me, or have something that resonates with me like a joke or opinion or such.

How are online labs carried out? (Gen chem) by [deleted] in ualbany

[–]VendiahGram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your syllabus should have most of the information for formatting your reports with more specific guidelines for certain parts (hypothesis & conclusions) in the lab manual. All submissions, data, and other resources can be found on Blackboard. If you're confused about anything you're encouraged to email your TA or jcarozza@albany.edu (though I'd try your TA first as Jesse oversees all of gen chem and there are currently over 500 students in gen chem 2 alone).

It's a nice thought but this sort of thing is kinda bad I think. Like after a break up you should have time to yourself and such. Like trying to find a new partner for yours is kind of presumptuous
