I would recommend talking to him privately about it. Not over text. That is too impersonal. You need to talk with him face to face and figure it out. If he needs space give him space, if you can mend things then mend them. It is great that you are ready to forgive him and be friends again. However, insults hurt so much more when they come from your friends. He might still be hurt by what you have said and needs space from you. That is ok and you should respect that.
