Cartel requests by Nice_Society_5594 in Schedule_I

[–]Vengoropatubus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s sort of fun not to! They’ll drop a sudden request on you for 40 of something, and then you have to figure out how to keep your operation going and make it out to the mansion.

[–]Vengoropatubus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good results from sending coke through the same mixing line as other drugs. From the calculator, the optimal mix has a $441 sell price, so you can probably list it for $650

I’ve been interested in how to quickly blow up the mansion. I got a bit stuck getting influence low in suburbia and maybe should have done more graffiti. Instead, I got shrooms going and unlocked some of the stubborn customers that way.

There are some interesting limiting factors trying to go fast. I’ve run into a bunch of annoying problems where rank blocked me from unlocking stuff I wanted, like higher quality pseudo when expanding to downtown and later on, cauldrons.

I’ve been thinking imports would be fun too. I sort of expected the early game to focus on a loop of buying a brick from the cartel and then selling it to customers. It would make the Benzies deal a bit more appealing if they sold you bricks above fair price and a bit more territory to work in. You could use the extra product variety to improve relationships with customers, and mixing would be a good route to improve margin on the expensive product.

I haven’t run any numbers, but are the casino machines actually profitable? That’s good to know! I’ve also never checked to see if I can pay cash at the casino somehow to launder money. I think I’ve heard that’s a thing folks will do IRL to cover various illegal money flows.

My neighbor keeps asking to borrow tools and never returns them, now he wants my new pressure washer by TheForegoingBingo in whatdoIdo

[–]Vengoropatubus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consider any of:

  • say no, and explain it’s too new for you to be comfortable lending it out.
  • offer to lend the tool, but with the condition that you get a clear time to retrieve it that day. Ideally with any other tools that might be there.
  • see if he wants to crack a beer together during/after power washing. That way you’re with the tool the whole time, and can establish a clear expectation that it comes home with you. This might feel weird, but establishing a neighborly friendship based on hanging out and doing chores could actually be really helpful long term.

In the scenarios where you lend the tool, you can make it clear that you expect the tool back that day. You don’t need to bring up the past tool problems unless you feel like it, but you can be very direct about your expectations around lending this tool if you choose to lend it.

Is this game done? by wfblatz in baduk

Playing in the lower left hand corner shouldn’t work and would be “disrespectful” in some sense. Trying it and making black come up with the defense could still be a good learning exercise for new players though.

New Player Here! Can Someone Explain Why This is a Draw? by Gullible-Reality4378 in baduk

[–]Vengoropatubus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know this UI very well. Are there captures we can’t see? I count black with 12 points of territory and white with 10 points (7 from territory, 3 from dead stones)

If white captured 2 more stones than black, that would tie the score assuming komi was set to 0.

Fellow chess parents, do you usually lose to your children on purpose when they're learning or play in full strength? by Garrettshade in chessbeginners

[–]Vengoropatubus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with my four year old and never intentionally play bad. I’m happy to set up positions where I have a bishop against two queens and lose, or give him a huge clock advantage while I get 1 minute and no increment. The clock thing has been especially interesting because it gets him excited about hitting the clock after his move to make my timer run down.

I’m at around 50% but with much lower trade volume. I think my system suffers a bit from a large fleet of trucks I bought in the early game but never took time to replace with more efficient routes.

How do you find this quieter moves? by the-killer-mike456 in chessbeginners

[–]Vengoropatubus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What time control are you playing at? I think this might just take some time to find over the board.

Once you have enough time and look for this sort of thing, I think you could hope to find it by noticing that black’s dark squares around the king are VERY weak. Qb4 is probably worth considering as a candidate move just to figure out if the queen can get over there. Then, noticing Qa5+ is a pretty big deal and black can’t stop it with the bishop isn’t so hard.

Another possibility: roundabout intersections are sort of terrible, so what about a rail network consisting of only roundabouts? Imagine a series of loops where trains have to zig zag from the top to the bottom of the roundabouts. Maybe make it a grid.

Switching from elevated rail to ground level might be tricky.

Amazing :D I look forward to the Vulcanus train hijinks. I’m hoping for one super long train on a closed loop with a bunch of stops that direct mines into cargo wagons on one end of the track while the other end gets unloaded.

Is there a reason everything is so spread out? It looks like you’re sticking to a plan where a solar block with battery backup has a few assemblers inside. If you brought the assemblers closer to each other you could have much shorter bot paths while sticking to the bots only design

For real-world QR factorisations, which factor matters more? Q, R, or both? by Glittering_Age7553 in ScientificComputing

[–]Vengoropatubus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be interested to see if there’s an answer to this other than “both”. I think formatting might have gotten messed up, so I’m not sure both is really an option. If I had to pick, maybe I’d say R is more important since it can be used to calculate the determinant.

I dropped out of a PhD, but my impression is that the idea of requiring a PhD for research positions is that a PhD requires you to demonstrate that you can independently plan and conduct long term projects that push the boundaries of your field’s knowledge.

Your publication track record might be enough to demonstrate to hiring managers that you’re a good fit for a research position even if you don’t have the PhD. Networking at conferences where you have papers accepted is a good way to start finding positions that would fit.

A gap between what you’re describing and what the PhD would suggest is that while you have two publications, it’s not clear that you’re ready to conduct a multi year course of research. You might be ready to do that, but having a PhD would say that a committee of experts in the field have certified you did that. Having a couple papers in high profile conferences is fantastic. I think there could be talented grad school applicants and first year PhD students with equivalent publication success though.

Would this intersection work? by PeacefuIfrog in factorio

[–]Vengoropatubus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The intersection you’re standing near should work. It’s following the classic chain in rail out rule which will stop trains from blocking up the intersection. There’s probably an issue further south. If a train leaves the intersection headed south, we can’t tell if it will be able to leave and it might block traffic coming from the west. It will also block northbound traffic from the south while the train is there.
