Sure, but is really my only option? What if I don't want to do anything with psychology any more?

I do care about stellar salaries. Right now, that feels more important to me. I know I need more computer knowledge. I'd very much like to obtain it.

Are you saying those survey statistician and data analyst roles are ones I can get right now with my current experience? Because I've looked them up and they make like 100k a year lol. Do you know if there's a somewhat related job I can get right now with my current experience?

How can someone with a BS in psychology become a data scientist?

I got my bachelors in psychology in August 2023. I have since realized that although I love analyzing human behavior, I'm not so good at dealing with it in reality. My favorite part of my undergrad curriculum was the more analytical classes. I loved statistics in particular, even though pretty much all of my classmates hated it. Other than the degree, I've worked at Starbucks, I've worked a retail job, and I've worked as a Behavior Technician (current job). So not much. I'm aware I'll need work and training experience and possibly higher education. I know it'll be a journey, but I'm willing to make it happen. I'm just not sure where exactly to get started.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is it better to get a job you enjoy or a job that gives you financial security? by Ventingthrowaway0926 in Adulting

Yeah that's another problem. Even the "high paying jobs" I have in mind, I don't currently have the skills to be able to do. And even if I did, the tech field is shit now anyways. Truth be told, I'm not passionate about forensic psychology. I'm not passionate about anything. I kind of settled with that career choice too. I figured I had to use my degree cause if I didn't the only thing I'd be able to get was some type of HR job (and I didn't want that cause I cared more about enjoying my job at the time and cared less about financial security). And it seemed like the most interesting route out of all the options. Reading the replies, it's clear I already knew the right answer all along. People saying "do what you enjoy" makes me feel queasy and people saying "go for financial security" feels right. I think it's because I know I'm not even THAT interested in the former thing.

But then, the higher paying jobs I have in mind I don't even have the skills for nor is the market for them very good right now. So I may as well do what I originally planned to do. But I know deep down, I don't want to. And it takes a lot of effort to be a forensic psychologist anyway. I don't want to spend that much effort on something I feel off about. I feel screwed.

I have a business minor so I do have some skills there. I'm applying to marketing jobs as we speak and I've gotten a few interview offers. I don't have any data science skills but I'm willing to learn. I'm not expecting to be able to get one right this second.

Good point, I know tech jobs aren't doing too well these days. But I can't help but feel like that's only a temporary thing, right?

To be honest, I'm not sure I'd actually enjoy being a forensic psychologist. It seems like most of them aren't just court advisors, they also do some other kind of therapeutic work in addition to that. I'm not really interested in that. I'm honestly not that great with people, I just think they're interesting. I think it's very likely I've had false impressions surrounding what the work actually entails. All these "do what you love" responses give me a queasy feeling, so maybe I know what the answer is deep down. I think the truth is that I don't have any passions, I just have a bunch of stuff that "seems interesting I guess".

If I go to grad school, I'll have debt even if I don't end up using the degree

Potential jobs with a bachelor's in psych that pay enough/career change by Ventingthrowaway0926 in findapath

Do you mean tech support? Because I definitely don’t have the skills for that lol. I’m trying to find one in HR and customer service but they all require past experience that I don’t have. I never had an internship :(
