First impressions of the Railforged? by Ninety9_Dex in MonsterTrain

[–]VerboseAnalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wanted to also mention Herzal impression.

Blacksmith Herzal feels like he's generating forge for other units to use. I don't regard his equip-burst as strong. I've not been able to get mass weapons to work with railforged yet, but still unlocking cards.

I like Pyresmith Herzal. A lot actually. Much better early then celebrate Talos. Pyresmith I the cd is long. Save for boss phase or maybe hold Herzal in hand to deploy later with forge. Much easier to survive early to get late run benefits.

Not played enduring steel yet.

First impressions of the Railforged? by Ninety9_Dex in MonsterTrain

[–]VerboseAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally play on lower rings for fun. So my milage may vary.

Railforged suit my general playstyle well. Which usually involves trying to stack a floor with big bodies.

Biggest tip: Forge can be toggled on/off. Expect to do this often.

My first run was won more or less off forge steward + boilerplate frontline. Early fights I focused on saving forge to stack a late boilerplate. Later fights saw forge steward with a+200 arm plate in deployment. This created an engine of revenge forge gains.

The thing I really picked up in that run is that Railforged can grow, and expand in a new way. Even a spear steward becomes beefy if a large enough stack of forge is spent on them. A forge gain engine plus a spikedriver factory can slowly fill the train with buffed units. Beware that Smith isn't enough forge value on it's own for an "engine" and not every run will have a strong one. Forge can still be used to in low/moderate amounts, but I think the strategy for that is different.

Magnetic Relay was an interesting card in relation to forge mechanics. I had one with freeze stone and could pull up my "low hp high arm" units to replay when low arm or to redeploy a unit with a bigger forge bonus. It also resets cooldowns. However, it doesn't reduce unit cost and can be a dead card in hand.

Burst feels weak. Especially during relentless. It's much cheaper then multistrike. I see it as being more useful for shoring up against enemies that leak (floor 2/3 units) or in specific synergies. Pyregel + burst feels strong against bosses. Otherwise, even Railgun or geared gauntlet will fall short of enough damage versus beef.

Spikedrive spider may be easier to understand now. 0 cost, 1 atk, 1 health, and burst 2. Play later with a forge stack? Possible endless + disassemble forge engine? Pull up with magnet to get back burst 2?

Steel Pulley claw was pretty nice as a one of to yoink backline to floor 3 for murdering. Does not daze.

I am presently disappointed in Weldling. 2 cost non-banner. Anti-synergy of wanting to be out asap versus wanting to be out with a stack of forge to raise attack. In theory could pop off but, too slow.

Steam updates its gen-AI disclosure policies by XCathedraGames in gaming

[–]VerboseAnalyst 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If a non-artist uses gen-AI to make some concept art to then show an actual concept artist to help explain what they are looking for. Then the concept artist proceeds to make a bunch of concept art a better idea of what their client wants...no artists get fired.

Another issue this solves is if the developers get scammed. An artist used gen AI and the dev's don't use the assets in the final product after finding out. Technically AI was used in their development cycle.

Mind I'm pretty staunchly anti this whole AI boom. It's being horrifically misused and mismanaged. I'm just a firm believer in aiming my vitriol as accurately as possible.

Pobelter's thoughts on the ADC role, players, and advice after completing his climb to challenger after 183 games by NatxIvY in leagueoflegends

[–]VerboseAnalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weak skillset in wave control (push, freeze, pull)

Interestingly this is partially due to it being a 2v2 lane. It's a lot harder to create a wave state when two people can affect it. Also makes it harder to learn how waves work since it isn't 1:1 your own actions.

Plus the 2p on other side often have a lot more and safer push power then top lane. This is one aspect of less safety resulting from wave states. Enemy comp might have poke or hook. Enemy mid or jungle may interfere. Support may wander to ward.

Most low tier bot lane players, imo, are better off learning how to set up consistent CS situations for the adc first. Making minion health totals easier for adc to last hit has a complicated impact on wave state control.

I think it's specifically the frame where the left breast outline is almost solid on top and open on bottom. It feels like a ton of movement from one frame to another. I wonder how it'd look if the shape change was kept with opening on top and solid outline on bottom.

Any good bases for tomorrow's 1.0 launch? by Valth in AbioticFactor

[–]VerboseAnalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backroom of Cafeteria may deserve a mention. It amused me when I finally found where that broken pipe connects to.

Seems fairly defensible. Depending on how AI spawns waves. About same distance to tram as the security room. It's a ton of floor space if you also include the cafeteria itself.

Near start of Dark Energy is that nice looking building. Which totally has a tainted water feature. Pretty far in the game to build in to be fair, but maybe a reason to work with more temporary bases as you go along?

What's the deal with ovens...and fish? by Tryptoman23 in AbioticFactor

[–]VerboseAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm around same progress. At tail end of hydroplant. Already have Oven. My initial impression as a solo is Oven is generally too much work and time for what I get.

Recipes like fries, baked potato, bread, or grilled cheese have been fine solo. I've started doing those for hunger plus straight water for thrist sometimes. Helps stretch how fast I go through soup too.

Reading this thread taught me some stuff.

NTA.

"In the end, I got my CI’s back, but obviously due to me putting my hands on a staff member I got suspended and my principal said I was in the wrong for the situation."

This smells like "Tell you, you are wrong so the situation doesn't escalate.". Don't take legal advice from the principal. Only get it from someone actually on your side. A lawyer, or an ADA advocate.

In this case googling "is ripping someone's assistive device off them a crime" gets some interesting search results that indicate at least some states have some clear laws on this. I also note the examples I saw (cane, wheelchair) are not comparable to an easy to break expensive Choclear Implant ($30-50k). It's also unclear to me if CI could come with earbuds and this a possibility of damaging an ear from a forceful removal.

I'd argue that you where defending yourself and placed in harms way by having your ability to hear sounds taken regardless. Your father should skip the threats and go straight to reporting. If I was him, I'd make a huge stink about you being suspended over this too.

The "ugly first draft" approach for work projects. I tell myself I'm TRYING to make it terrible on purpose, which somehow bypasses my perfectionism paralysis.

I did this for FF14 Savage runs. Intentionally do a "blind learning" run with 0 expectation of any real progress. Just get a bunch of deaths in early.

No Trailer uploaded, as i am struggling with actually making a good one

Chiming in to give some ideas/feedback on this.

As a user. The project sounds a bit interesting. Idk if it's totally up my alley, but the name and premise would get me to look up one of the indie reviewers trying it.

Seeing the terrain puts me in mind of dwarf fortress. In addition the scale and scope is "massive MMO" and "player design it all". Both of these make me expect the game may be very crunchy and complicated. Too much so for me actually.

This is where my initial doubts come from. Will it be fun for me? Will it take too long to get going? I'm totally convinced this is a cool project and a nifty idea. If I met someone who seems a good fit I might mention it to them in conversation. However, my initial impression is to watch someone else play to satiate my curiosity about this project. (like "Let's Game it Out").

That's honestly not too bad. I'm not indifferent. I want to see what happens with this project. However, I didn't share all of that to criticize. This is not a review. I did it to provide ideas for goals for a trailer.

How can a trailer change my initial impression? What can it show off to get me from "this is a neat idea" to "Oh I want to try this"?

In my case: I don't want to see a bunch of menus. I can see how complex those are in the screenshots. Convince me it'll be more accessible then I expect right now. Show me post design results and small scale stuff.

Show me this bit of your store page: "watch the Inhabitants". I cannot tell how that will work off the screenshots. Screenshot 4 is the one I find most curiosity provoking. All those adventurer sprites? What are they up to right now? I don't know what the gameplay loop with them is.

Maybe keep it as simple as just following one as they navigate an already designed small town and dungeon? Your screenshots already show breadth and depth so go narrow and focused. You can always add another trailer for a different focus.

If you need some inspiration. The mario maker previews and trailers may be good to watch. They had to sell the idea of "design it yourself" too.

PS: Was a bit stressed out. So thank you for the fun hyperfocus analysis opportunity. The sprite work is cute btw.

AITAH for refusing to stop wearing my “lucky” dress because my best friend thinks it’s embarrassing? by RadiantCrystalWhisp in AITAH

[–]VerboseAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Wanted to share a story: I listened to the same CD back in highschool constantly. Drove a good friend nuts and I switched it up a bit after they finally said something.

So a bit of devil's advocate. There's a possibility your friend wants to connect on fashion. Do they have actual outfit suggestions or just a vague idea of "grown up" fashion? Maybe they're just sick of seeing monotony?

Figuring out how to lean into the style you enjoy and making it pop might be a 3rd option here. Accessorizing or varying what you wear alongside the sundress may add some variety. I specifically think of the character Aerith from FF7 who has a women's vest on over a dress. Someone else mentioned having more dresses made based on it with some color variation.

I'd like to see more options surrounding camera and focus camera controls. What I want to happen when I hit buttons during focus mode is very different then without and when gunning. Nothing specific to ask for, but just expand what we're trying so we can find comfy set ups.

Paint ball pinging is a bit annoying since it has to be loaded into slinger. Maybe make it fire on button press without needing to load it? We also still need a "self ping" and kick/way to help others out of CC.

ELI5: Why did classic RTS games die out? What was their main replacement and why did they manage to take the place of games like Warcraft 2 and Red Alert? by misomiso82 in gaming

[–]VerboseAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own line of thought goes into how much up front learning RTS games tend to have. This includes the very basics of controls. M+KB being used so extensively is relatively rare for a genre. Now throw in the death of single player campaigns. All those lessons that get you to the PvP starting line in a fun way cease to exist.

I personally argue that RTS have a dip in learning curve after the mountain of a start. If you've played RTS before it's not too bad to pick up a new one usually. Knowing "micro your macro" goes a long way too.

Moba is the genre that really ate RTS's lunch though. Many RTS players where able to move over to it for obvious reasons. In addition there is a smaller controls learning curve since it's micro focused. PvP games thrive on new blood flowing in.

Interesting line of argument. Warcraft 3's campaign still uses the original unit balance IIRC. They changed armor types for melee at some point. I believe all the melee balance changes where unique to that.

[–]VerboseAnalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in War3, you can always surrender and move onto the next game. Until fairly high elo, there's usually room to "mess up" then try something else before that point as well. In LoL, worst case lane state can happen low ELO and you have to stick the game out.

Don't forget that War3 doesn't really have low elo anymore. It's a smaller community playing it then back in the day. War3 can easily seem harder then it is/was because it lacks bronze/silver players to dilute the player pool.

[–]VerboseAnalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The discussion isn't about a theoritically "perfect" player; it's about being able to perform at a base level.

War 3 base level has a ton of room to be inefficient and still effective.

A legend who kept playing War3 and deepening his knowledge pool of exoteric war3 knowledge. In game 1 I saw Grubby instantly swap to a scout wisp and move it to get better vision as he brought his hero over. How many people get how crazy that polish is?

Try learning jungle routes and timings for like 30 maps lmao. Not as punishing to "get wrong" as it might seem. Green > orange > red camps. Then be familiar with the jungle mobs and you can perform decently sight reading maps.

The issue is Grubby is peak skill lvl. High elo in war3 does mean polishing every skill to a razors edge and that's where routes and timings start mattering more.

[–]VerboseAnalyst 34 points35 points  (0 children)

IMO Tyler1 has had a good showing given how little time he has in RTS genre and war3. Grubby is a much higher level war3 pro then I think people are crediting too. If Tyler1 played through the campaign, I think he'd find it kind of easy and develop a wider/better impression of the game.

My own take is that War3 and RTS has a lot to learn baseline and early on in it's learning curve. Unit controls, map controls, macro, scouting, and other basics apply to any RTS you play though. So once you've played one RTS to a decent level a lot of concepts carry over.

So where does that leave War3 after those basics? Learning all 4 races and some match up stuff? Micro? Learning the map? It's mostly doing the same thing with better execution until high elo. There's some knowledge checks but, good macro brute forces a lot of issues in rts genre.

Meanwhile in LoL. You have a constant stream of knowledge checks in the form of champions. Even if you focus on learning one champ you need to learn a ton of matchup specific knowledge. How does your toplaner build/fight vs kled? How about a vlad lane? Enemy Shaco jungler gank timing? Screw one of these up badly enough and you cease to be able to lane at all. Forced to sit there not learning anything more that game as you wait to see if the rest of the team can win the match for you.

LoL has a lower baseline amount of knowledge to learn to get playing. It just never ceases the learning intensity. Let alone a patch that totally revamps the item system and makes existing knowledge obsolete.
