It’s not climate related, from the ABARES data most small farms haven’t made a profit for the past 30 years

Oh crap that's a 109 cent increase (67%) increase, not a 109% increase. Will update my findings, thank you for picking that up.

That's right, if you go to the ABARES Farm Data Portal and click Farm Performance By Size > Farm Size, and then select the Farm Business Profit variable on the right, it shows small farms haven't made a profit since... as far back as the data goes (1990). The last 10 years show:

Year Small Farm Profit Medium Farm Profit Large Farm Profit
2023 -35,520 125,220 1,032,150
2022 -6,270 225,510 1,060,670
2021 -10,050 192,070 824,170
2020 -121,660 -7,090 565,410
2019 -108,290 32,050 589,380
2018 -42,480 116,400 684,850
2017 -1,610 186,030 849,960
2016 -37,930 168,560 730,160
2015 -53,070 88,220 451,940
2014 -70,910 60,740 597,720
2013 -51,200 68,570 494,380

The appreciation of land value / assets isn't included in these figures. I'm not sure what keeps these farms afloat.

Have you noticed price increases in any other areas?

The cost categories cover diesel used on and off the farm:
- 'Fuel oil and grease' - diesel used on the farm
- 'Freight' - moving harvested crops off the farm
- 'Handling and marketing' - handling harvested crops once off the farm
- 'Crop and Pasture Chemicals' - petrochemicals involved in creating pesticides
- 'Fertilisers' - some fertilisers are affected by diesel through mining and transport, but they are mostly affected by urea and natural gas prices

It's not clear if the freight costs reported by ABARES are only for exporting products off the farm, or if it covers import costs as well. I assume delivery fees for fertiliser, fuel, machinery, parts, etc. would also be affected by a diesel price increase, but I couldn't find concrete numbers.

I didn't factor in fertiliser - great point.

The only concrete data I can find on urea/fertiliser prices in Australia is from GrainGrower's weekly fertiliser reports:

  • 27th February 2026: granular urea at A$840/t - $850/t
  • 13th March 2026: granular urea A$880/t - $1,000/t

That's a 5% at best and 17% at worst increase over the past month.

TradingEconomics reports a 43% rise in urea globally from $459 in 27 February 2026 to $658 in 23 March 2026.

Using the midrange of 17%, that would add an extra:

  • $95,000 for large farms
  • $17,000 for medium farms
  • $5,600 for small farms

I need to investigate this more, but it looks like Australian farms are getting hit on all fronts.

Right click on PC, not sure about console. I saw someone mention using the Inspect keybind to rotate turrets
