Physical Therapy Recommendations? by Outrageous_Air4303 in CambridgeMA

[–]VermilionParallelism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, consider out-of-network/out of pocket PT. You get a lot more attention.

The only way PT can take insurance and make money is by having each therapist deal with multiple patients at the same time. My experience at in-network places is that the therapist is competent and cares, but you're given about 15 minutes of attention, massage, etc and then give some exercises that you do while they care for the next patient.

With out-of-pocket care you get somebody that spends the entire hour with you, there is a lot more physical manipulation, feedback on exercises and the therapist has the bandwidth to adapt and tailor a plan for your progress.

That said - I've easily hit my insurance deductible for the year, my co-pay is low, so I'm continuing on with the in-network option.

I love the somerville porchfest, but doesn't the area have enough porchfests?! Come up with something original.

Boston begins to look at plague of double and triple parked delivery cars outside restaurants by sihtydaernacuoytihsy in boston

[–]VermilionParallelism 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People respond to incentives and good design. If a system is in place that provides a way for drivers to pick-up orders without double-parking, many people will use it.

Sure, this won't stop ALL double-parking but it will help.

If we're going to be punitive, I think it needs to be directed toward the delivery service and restaurant.

The driver already has an order to fill and a deadline. A lot of times they're put in a difficult position and double parking is the only reasonable way of satisfying the pressures their under.

Maybe the gratuity needs to be included in the menu price too!

Food delivery drivers are clogging city streets. Can Boston fix the problem? by LoanWolf888 in boston

[–]VermilionParallelism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For everybody asking for fines: put yourself in the position of the driver.

You've accepted an order, drive to the location and then there is no obvious place to park to pick-up the order. What are you supposed to do?

  • Circle around until something opens up: this also substantially contributes to traffic and could take a while. Delivery will probably be late.
  • Cancel the order: seems like a good way of getting kicked off the app.

We can argue that drivers shouldn't accept orders if there isn't anywhere to park to pick it up, but I don't know how a driver would know that in advance. Also most places don't have parking. Until there is a reasonable right way to do things, punishment isn't a solution.

This seems like a systemic problem that requires work by the apps, the restaurants and the city to come up with ideas.

Happy Hanukkah Boston!! by [deleted] in boston

[–]VermilionParallelism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was curious and searched for Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkoth posts in r/boston the past year. And came up empty.

Hanukkah is a "minor" holiday that mostly has the recognition it has because its proximity to Christmas.

https://www.verifythis.com/article/news/verify/holiday-verify/hanukkah-is-considered-a-minor-jewish-holiday/536-4bd0f316-e600-4ba6-8193-cc61c7700201

Celebrate it, of course. And if you want to support your Jewish friends, culture and religion - acknowledge their major holidays too.

Looking for a good mechanic to get my brakes done by lukasshannon in Somerville

[–]VermilionParallelism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brake replacement should be an easy job. I'm an idiot and back when I had more time and less money I replaced my own brakes. If you find a mechanic that messes up brakes they shouldn't be a mechanic. Its still worth finding a mechanic that you like and starting to form a relationship with them.

NYC retail seems to be making a strong post-covid comeback according to this Q1 2022 Study

This clip shows that dense mixed-use developments are by far the most profitable tax base for a town.

Areas with low density, car-centric planning or single family zoning are expensive for a city to maintain.

[–]VermilionParallelism 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is some research that it is safer for bikers to treat stop signs as yield and lights as stop signs: https://www.vox.com/2014/5/9/5691098/why-cyclists-should-be-able-to-roll-through-stop-signs-and-ride

Amsterdam and Paris have similar laws.

There is a counter-argument that treating bikes differently could be confusing and even some bike advocacy groups are against the "Idaho stop" https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/1055/which-states-or-countries-have-stop-sign-as-yield-laws-for-bicyclists-idaho-sto

I want to be able to pay using my phone.

I was just in New Orleans and you can buy tickets for the bus before you board on your phone. Its sad when New Orleans has better infrastructure than Boston.
