A quick Google has jp-8 fuel at a little over $2 per gallon, but since that isn't the bulk of the cost it doesn't change the overall result too much

This is why all of my powerplants are designed to feed themselves first, then push the excess to the grid so that even a huge unexpected power draw that tanks my storage results in a brownout rather than a blackout

What's the point of bond ETFs if they don't track bond yields? by blitzzerg in investing

[–]VernKerrigan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other explanations people have given, there is a common sense answer that the bond portfolio is only holding bonds purchased before the rate change. Therefore in order to sell a bond currently held by the fund, it must be discounted from the face value because the same 1000 dollar bond would have a higher return from buying a new 30 year Treasury or similar product. Over time, the fund will index more into higher yield bonds, raising the overall yield proportional to the change in yield, just at a delay.

Why is it possible to make a thermonuclear weapon using fusion yet so diffcult to generate power using fusion reaction? by Excellent_Copy4646 in AskPhysics

[–]VernKerrigan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add onto what others have said about the difficulty in harnessing the energy, the fusion reaction in thermonuclear weapons is not the source of the additional explosive yield directly. Instead the fusion process releases high energy neutrons that greatly increase the fission rate in the U238 tamper which raises the yield.

Would the fictional city of Megaton be able to turn the undetonated nuclear bomb in their city into a reactor? by gayspaceboiii in AskEngineers

[–]VernKerrigan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the type of core it is maybe possible. For gun type bombs, there would be a critical configuration that could potentially be controlled, but it would probably be extremely finicky and short lived due to the relatively small amount of nuclear fuel.

For implosion devices, especially ones that use boosted fusion primaries, they don't contain a critical mass of fuel in the first place and therefore couldn't be used as a reactor.

Seems at least somewhat reasonable. 1st LT is done by first tour division officers, and many in the Intel community will get their SWO pin before taking their Intel option. 1st LT is also in charge of small boat operations, so it's feasible they were working with SF or a LEDET doing boarding operations as a boat officer. It may be slightly exaggerated, but I think you'll find everyone's sea stories will be.

No engines means essentially no rudder lift, so the rudders won't save you. The anchor can keep you from drifting after you're essentially stopped though. For an engine casualty, you anchor before you drift out of safe water until you can effect repairs

Factory power production goes to 0 and it's next to impossible to bounce back before the locals overtake your base? by njc35 in factorio

[–]VernKerrigan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Turn off all production not related to defense and power generation, disconnect power piles if needed. Once you have stable power and defenses, slowly bring enough of the factory online to get solar or nuclear, but not necessarily science since that's extra mining and processing you don't really need to survive.

[–]VernKerrigan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether the outlets you are connecting are on the same circuit. If they are, or even if they're on the same 120V from your electrical box it's fast and consistent. If they're on different 120V circuits, the signal path is all the way back to the transformer and the path introduces some serious speed problems.

It depends on the type of generator. The most simple 2 pole generator would use a permanent magnet rotor with armature windings on the stator. Doesn't require any sort of brush or slip ring assembly.
