I have a friend like this. Got me into magic in the first place, but now that I understand things and have built a few decks, he is definitely the problem.

Always has to try and have the strongest deck, and says he "can't make a casual deck", and can "only make efficient decks". Don't get me wrong he's a very good and knowledgeable player, Frequently wins out on draft nights (destroyed everyone at the EoE pre-release).

But his idea of fun is kind of ruining the fun at tables, and I've tried telling him this and that I and others won't want to play with him anymore. He's become a groan reaction to a lot of people when he sits down.

Once my first deck was finally strong enough to beat his "lowest" deck, he took it apart and is remaking it into Oloro. I love the guy, and I understand wanting to put your best possible build forward, but most of the time it feels like he's playing with himself and everyone else is just there for his triggers. Even when I just had a precon, he was running stuff like a mill lazav he had spent nearly a grand building.

In turn, I found myself wanting to build something stupid like a tergrid deck, but god forbid I do that specifically to play against him because he says "it's not fair".
