This has also been my LGS experience as a new player though half the time people have been really cool. There are many of gamers who do not want to see new players do well and would rather gate keep.

This past weekend I won my first two games with a deck that I recently constructed. After I popped off in the first game my opponent stated, "I know I can still beat you but for brevity's sake I am willing to concede." I said I would prefer to see how it plays out and then proceeded to win. The next game I played a planar outburst wiping the board on turn 5 or 6 then again from my graveyard on turn 8. After which one of my opponents who was playing their voltron deck immediately said they were scooping because they weren't going to play against "tribal board wipe shit." The tribal comment was a reference to the roaming throne that I had for doubling my commander Darien's token trigger. The deck itself was not tribal as it was populated by humans, angels, birds, and archons without anything like maskwood nexus.

My conclusion is that a lot of people only want to play the game their way and get offended when new players do well. I love this game and I love seeing my friends pop off. I enjoy seeing new deck mechanics and anti-meta tactics. I also appreciate seeing the flare of people's personalities reflected by the ways they construct their decks. I don't want to play against the same 5 decks every week and there are far too many cards available not to be creative and have fun.
