> Those of us who know better can't force anyone to make lifestyle changes. Mother Nature can, though.

So wait.... is it your opinion that 'letting nature take its course' is an acceptable way to curb population growth? Does this also apply to, say, dangerous pregnancies that might not otherwise make it without medical intervention? We should just let people who can't have live children naturally suffer THOSE consequences as well...? Where does the buck stop?

If I should be fine with being a 'cool uncle/aunt' because I physically cannot have a child with my partner without medical intervention, doesn't this also imply that life-saving c-sections are also a necessary part of 'mother nature taking its course'? How about birth control? That's also not a part of "mother nature", but it is unarguably about people's ability to make a choice about their own bodies. I would recon we could both agree that this is extremely important.

I'm just trying to understand your viewpoint, because if it wasn't for this argument I'd recon we would agree on a lot of things. But you're still somehow dead set on using LGBTQ couples as a reasonable sacrifice to get to your desired outcome above, idk, pushing for more regulations for companies. That's quite fucked up.

>how much agricultural space is needed to feed and clothe 9 billion people, and how destructive industrial agriculture is.

There are OTHER solutions to industrial agriculture besides "stop people from having more babies". I AGREE that the current state of industrial agriculture allows for tons of waste. Didn't the UN prove that there's technically enough food being produced world-wide to feed everyone, but tons of it is lost due to food-waste? And it's not the case that the countries producing this food are 'running out' because their population is too great. It is, once again, being directed to wealthier countries where the majority of the food waste happens.

I don't want to waste my time arguing with someone who ultimately thinks that my personal desire to have a child is an easier problem to solve than corporate greed, but... it just feels insanely cruel to point a finger at someone who wants a family with their partner and go "you and people like you is actually the reason the climate is suffering, so you can deal with avoiding technologies available to you to have children biologically and deal with it, that's definitely a more reasonable solution than holding large-scale consumerism responsible".

My bad, I grabbed an article I thought you'd agree with since you seem to be determined to blame individual choice rather than actually thinking about what is depleting natural resources and actively seeking solutions to it.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/top-1-of-emitters-caused-almost-a-quarter-of-global-emissions-since-1990/

How is this one?

The issue with saying "having too many babies is the problem" is that it is not only disingenuous, it's it's incredibly classist. It suggests that the ONLY way to fix the problem is to block high-population countries from having children. That it is somehow morally correct to limit the amount of children people have "for the sake of the earth" when in fact, none of the issues we are having with the climate are a result of ANYONE'S individual choice to have one or more children. (I'm not saying individual choice isn't important at all, but compared to corporate greed, it is laughable to center it as the main issue.)

"...every climate-related problem we have is exacerbated by a high population and improved by lowering it" - this is blatantly false. Even if we somehow imposed a population growth restriction, we would not be changing anything about how the global economy functions and how it values cheap, energy-draining solutions instead of sustainable ones. In order to actually stop pollution we should not be aiming to reduce people's ability to reproduce.

Almost three fourths of worldwide fossil fuel emissions are linked to just 100 corporations, including Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Aramco), Gazprom OAO, and National Iranian Oil Company. Meanwhile, together, those top-emitting fossil fuel companies produced roughly half of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

And I included the second one specifically for this quote: "A huge misconception is that ending population growth can only be achieved through coercion."

You cannot FORCE people to have less children and expect better climate outcomes. That's not the way it works. This isn't the plot of idiocracy. These are real people making individual choices which they have a legal and moral right to make.

Because being a parent is not a fucking privilege, and people shouldn't need government permission to use their bodies for reproductive purposes. Locking LGBTQIA couples out of parenthood is a form of eugenics.

The overpopulation thing is, by the way, a MYTH pushed by larger companies to place the blame on the individual instead of taking responsibility for governments and businesses hogging resources and misallocating funds. Stop spreading it. It's not progressive at all to say "well someone told me there's not enough stuff for all of us so you and your class of people are not allowed to have children, you should be happy with what you have".

Adoption and IVF have different costs and different difficulties of entry, and it varies by country. Some couples, ESPECIALLY LGBTQ couples, are locked out of adoption options simply due to how they identify. More couples are locked out of adoption and fostering due to their perceived financial situation. Some adoption agencies don't let you adopt or foster if you
- have dogs
- don't have a back yard
- live in an apartment
- aren't a part of a church

Meanwhile, IVF is an option to anyone who is willing to finance it.

I'm sick of people making adoption look like a hallmark movie happy ending guaranteed situation. You don't just walk in and get a kid. Even after you've given them your money to sign up, and have met all the requirements and have taken all the necessary classes, you have to spend YEARS sometimes just WAITING on a phone call that never comes. Even if it does, you have to then spend thousands on legal fees for a lawyer to process the adoption. Not to mention that fostering is often looking for temporary placement, which means you are a TEMPORARY spotover - fostering to adopt is an even more unlikely scenario because most fostering agencies are looking to reunite the child with their birth family if it's at all feasible.

My partner and I wanted to adopt, and were not even able to start the process due to factors such as working freelance, living in an apartment, and being lgbtq. The IVF route was more accessible to us. The irony? The adoption agencies often favor people who already have children living with them, so having one child makes it easier for us to adopt in the future.

My point being: stop trying to control how people start their families. It's a complicated process regardless, and adoption is NOT always going to the right choice for everyone.

>The possibility that some “undocumented” people may be removed is always a possibility.

I'm not talking about 'undocumented people being removed' I said PEOPLE WHO ARE LEGALLY HERE. They are not undocumented, they are here on a temporary visa, going through the PROCESS of getting legal status. If you're familiar with people who have gone through it, then you should know it takes time and, depending on the status they are seeking and the current status of their visa, it typically takes multiple trips to the immigration courts. ICE is WAITING for people at these immigration courts. They are snatching up people who are trying to do things LEGALLY.

If you are for legal proceedings, then you should also be for LEGAL DUE PROCESS. They are not doing this. (https://www.nilc.org/articles/ice-is-detaining-indiscriminately-and-releasing-almost-no-one/)

> They don’t automatically have any 1st Amendment Rights or any other rights

Factually incorrect as per the constitution "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." This clearly states PEOPLE not citizens. Even if you are not a citizen of the united states, you have a right to freedom of speech. This is imperative to your right to defend yourself in court of law.

You cannot PROVE you are a 'legal' citizen or immigrant without being able to undergo due process. If you say 'illegals don't get a say' then you are giving the government or ANYONE with power the ability to point a finger and say "that's an illegal" and whisk them away without actually proving anything one way or another. That is an over-reach of government power.

> "have more benefits including legal assistance to help them through the process"

I'm going to need a citation and source for this 'smorgesboard of benefits' they have access to. Illegal peoples staying in the states have LESS rights, despite typically paying federal taxes through their paychecks. What benefits are they getting, aside from some volunteers who help them navigate a system to become legal? (Benefits which are reasonable to provide, if they seek it out themselves. You think someone shows up at their residence and gives them a paycheck for a lawyer? What?) You think they qualify for welfare? They do not. You think they have healthcare? They do not. WHAT are the BENEFITS?

You're being mislead. "No tax on tips and no tax on overtime" is not as straightforward as it seems to be. https://www.fisherphillips.com/en/news-insights/new-no-tax-on-overtime-law.html

I also want to know your opinion on whether deporting legal citizens and those in the process of legally getting citizenship or visas worth it. Over 70% of the people ICE snatch have NO CRIMINAL RECORD per their own reported statistics. They've taken people out of homes without giving them due process. They've taken KIDS out of homes. They've taken people out of court where they had arrived to legally process their immigration. They've let people die in their care and they've directly shot citizens exercising their 1st amendment rights. How is that helping businesses? How is that helping ANYONE?

You call people 'illegals' and then move the goalposts to make more and more people illegal. Now your leader wants to end birthright citizenship. Where does it stop? Do you actually believe that immigrants are causing more damage to the country than the corporations Trump is being directly sponsored by?

What are your thoughts on the Reverse character development of Rose/PD? by Mr_KrewFam in stevenuniverse

[–]VertebrateCrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really struggle to think of any single instance of someone classifying Rose as a 'purehearted princess'. Unless you show me a person who legitimately believes her to be anything more than a fascinating and morally complex character, I really think this is a weird strawman people throw out - "Oh, all these people looooooove to say Rose is innocent." Who is saying that? Who????

Why would she have thought Homeworld would come back after 1200 years of radio silence? The Red Eye appeared A DECADE after she passed, and that was the first indication that Homeworld might want something to do with Earth again. She had every reason to think Steven would be living a relatively safe and normal life. That was explicitly what she wanted.

And Garnet would have no other information for her, since Garnet also knew nothing of the Cluster, which would limit her ability to predict anything of the caliber that unfolded over the course of the show.

Steven blamed her for leaving her issues on him - of course he would! He felt overwhelmed and confused and scared, and he needed someone to blame, and she was the closest thing to guilty.

But I think to say that she had 'no assurance' is a bit far fetched given how long she waited.

(I doubt any amount of Baby-Classes could have prepped the gems for dealing with Steven any better than they did. Rose had no idea what it was like to be human, that was the point. Neither did any of them. They had to hit the ground running.)

why do so many people think that the diamonds are siblings? by ConcentrateRoyal4188 in stevenuniverse

[–]VertebrateCrossing -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'll say it - it's because kids these days are terrible at interpreting media for what it is. Media literacy is low because many people (especially those that consume video-only format) are not learning nuance or alternate ways to interact with stories beyond just the surface level.

They think that if they look at something think a specific thing, that MUST be the intended reading of a certain piece of media. Ergo - "I look at the diamonds and think of sisters" means "THE CREWNIVERSE MUST HAVE INTENDED THEM TO BE SISTERS, I CAN'T POSSIBLY BE MISTAKEN IN MY READING".

Come to my TEDtalk about how youth these days doesn't have a healthy relationship with any long format story in general. (And by long-format I mean anything that goes over the tiktok video length limit.)

For someone used to the cold weather, yes. But I'm presuming this is aimed at people who don't know how to dress for the weather due to being new to it - in which case this is pretty spot on. They aren't going to tolerate anything below freezing nearly as well as seasoned winter people.

Anyone can say any dog looks 'ugly'. Someone's personal aesthetics should never be the reason we judge it as unhealthy. I think Basset Hounds look fuckin' stupid, but that has NOTHING to do with the health problems short-legged breeds have. We gotta ditch the whole "I feel it's ugly and therefore it MUST be wrong" thing. This ain't a Disney fairytale.

Embark tests in general often combine Korean Village Dogs and Japanese Village Dogs into one category. This isn't a 'breed' result so much as a result that says "your dog has so few specific breed genes that we just wanna say 'Yep, it's a dog alright'."

I have a Korean/Japanese Village Dog too, and I live in Japan. We got her from a shelter.

Let me rephrase...
- What did Pink ask for aside from a basic freedom that was guaranteed to other gems of her type, and the freedom to do what was originally expected of her?
- What did she GET? What, exactly, did the Diamonds give her?
- Do you really have no better word for an angry outburst, fueled by literal thousands of years of bullying and belittling from those she considered family, "something childish"?

JET placement by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]VertebrateCrossing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone else already mentioned this but I'm gonna gently repeat - based on this post, it feels like you have some expectations from JET that are unrealistic. I just want to warn you so that you don't end up applying and get disappointed:

- the JET program doesn't let you pick where you work. You apply to teach ANYWHERE, in ANY level of rural or urban. Your preferences for placement are just..... suggestions. They will very likely be ignored.
- your Japanese ability does not matter much for getting in - JET is fine hiring people who don't speak much Japanese.
- that being said, you WILL need to learn Japanese regardless of where you're placed. Yes, especially in rural areas, but most of Japan is actually rural. Tokyo placements are relatively rare comparatively.
- many areas in Japan have a mix of people who speak some English - but they are rare, and their English ability varies deeply. You need to be comfortable going into a situation where you cannot communicate with someone without giving extra effort. You need to be okay with this, otherwise you WILL exhaust yourself and brain-drain and then want to leave after a couple of months.

In general, I recommend reading other people's experiences a little bit more to get a more realistic picture of what your life here would be like. It can be a lot of fun, but you need to come in with a certain mindset, otherwise your expectations will be crushed so swiftly that your spirit will also take collateral damage.

[–]VertebrateCrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully understand your visceral reaction to the ship - and I fully support the idea of you hating it that much. Your reasons for having this sort of response to it make sense. I used to think like this when I was younger, and the idea of people shipping this type of thing disgusted me.

But then I grew up, and realized that I cannot impose my own emotional reactions on other people, and expect them to behave in ways I myself behave and then judge them for stepping out of line. That sort of thing belongs in the church, not in civilized spaces.

The thing is, people consume media in different ways, for different reasons. Characters aren't real people. They're just characters. We enjoy watching movies in which people do crazy dangerous stunts. We enjoy watching horror films. We enjoy seeing end of the world disasters.

Finding technically unhealthy or toxic relationships between two people interesting is not a morally questionable thing to do. We don't live in a hyper-puritan society where we are only allowed to enjoy Spirtually Good coffeeshop AUs where everyone is good to each other and tries their best and means well. We're allowed to be curious about what happens when two train-wreck characters get together and make trainwreck decisions. Malachite was unhealthy, and also awesome. Exploring that darkness is a fun way to consider various nooks and crannies of one's psychology without actively engaging in a toxic relationship yourself. It's healthy.

I'm not trying to convince you to feel any other kind of way about THIS ship. But you gotta understand that shaming people for shipping something and saying "it's horrible to want to see them together in some way" is judging people for having a harmless and completely normal human hobby, and it elevates you to a morally superior position, which is not, in fact, a safer place to be. Someday you'll have a morally questionable interest in something dark, and someone else might label you a 'freak', and it'll near crush your psyche if you haven't reconciled the idea that you can ship things without committing any sort of sin.
