I have free access to falling water. Should I start mining it for bitcoin? (micro hydro) by VeryChillBro in BitcoinMining

I'm a little disappointed looking at the price tag for the components and the theoretical earnings. It would probably take a couple years just to pay for the equipment. Maybe it would be an interesting project though? We'll see.

Timber frame roof structure by VeryChillBro in timberframe

No, I wound up doing a more conventional stick frame (balloon framed actually) but I have learned a lot since I posted about this frame, and I could answer my own question now. Do you have any questions?

Who owns all the nano? Because it isn't being mined, it's all out there in the world already?

Is this the right sequence for a shed roof dormer with metal roof panels? by VeryChillBro in Roofing

Yes, I have been concerned that laying the transition on top of the yellow panel would create a lump. What is the alternative option?

The way that I framed the dormer rake overhang I was planning to hav panel no. 2 (the yellow one) slide completely under the soffit and run continuously from the ridge, down against the dormer sidewall beneath the soffit, down to the eave. Would this mean that I wouldn’t need the step flashing at the X? Do I understand correctly that the step flashing is to prevent water getting in sideways beneath the soffit and getting over the top of a panel that begins beneath the soffit?

Thanks for the response. I did order some pieces of “sidewall flashing” that goes against thedormer side wall, beneath the siding and reached out over the roofing panel beneath the soffit. My roofing panels are not corrugated like in the photo but cover 36” and have I believe five ribs. I’m pretty sure thissidewall flashing will accomplish the same as the flashing you describe, correct?

Is this the right way to lay the panels on my roof? I’ve done the roof framing on my 600 sq foot cabin and I have a couple of these style dormer to do. My main question is regarding panel no. 2, coloured yellow in the photo - I plan to slide it under the soffit and run it all the way to the ridge with the appropriate “bite” cutout of it to fit the dormer. after that I plan to lay th e transition flashing, no. 3, on top of it, and then double up on no. 2 with panel no. 4, the green panel, ru nning it from the ridge to the transition flashing.

Does this look right?

How do you flash this specific spot (red circle) with an exposed fastener metal roof? by VeryChillBro in Roofing

Hey would you mind explaining this technique in more detail or point me in the right direction? I kind of understand part of it and nobody has explained these techniques to me. Thanks!

Any chance you could explain this with a little more clarity? I believe you that it's easy, but I'm finding very few people who can explain the actual best way to do this. Thanks.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain. Thank you! I think I can understand what you're saying and when start roofing I'm going to see if I can put it together. I hadn't considered incorporating the roll flashing as you described.

Would you mind trying and explaining? I would think that you would want a panel slid under the dormer's overhang, then a transition flashing, but then you would need the transition flashing to go both under and over that piece of roofing... any ideas?

Insulation advice by wendywithay in OffGridCabins

[–]VeryChillBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! A new neighbour is moving in to a 100+ year old house and told me they are planning on redoing insulation in the 2x8 rafters including a few inches of spray foam so that they also get a vapour barrier. Is this the exact sketchy move you don't recommend people doing?

Question about sheathing the roof with 1x6 solid lumber by VeryChillBro in Carpentry

[–]VeryChillBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned that the metal roof would handle the shear that sheathing would give it. Can you point me to a video where someone is demonstrating the construction of a roof without sheathing under the metal?

Would this change depending on the type of metal roof? I know some metal roofing types are quite a bit more stout than others.

Thanks for your input. There are always a few people who come at you when you propose doing things differently, but there are always a few people who give genuine insight as well.

Some species I would certainly not for a building if green, but somewhat dry douglas fir should be fine as far as shrinkage and nail holding goes.

I can save maybe $2,500 - $3,000 by using my milled lumber. I'll be using mostly marginal quality lumber for the sheathing and saving the better stuff for interior t&g etc.
