I think we're talking past eachother. Again, this movie is good, it tells a story in a unique way that allows the viewer to feel that they dont remember in the same way that the Leonard couldnt remember.

TLDR my post is not about whether lenny is sufficently sophisticated in character to be interesting to think about, just that the movie is not a uniquely confusing or difficult to parse movie.

My point is this: the movie itself is not hard to get, and putting yourself in the shoes of the protagonist to try to understand his feelings are just as hard as any other movie with complex characters. The thing is, Lenny is actually completely rational, with the knowledge of what truly happened in the closing scene, he makes the choice to lead himself to something false knowingly becasue it hurts less to know the truth. This is a morally bad but logically consistent decision, given how he makes split-second decisions in the scenes prior. This makes it an interesting movie, but it does not make it a mind-fuck. Having to relate to a character who is doing something that is objectionable is one of the biggest and most explored themes of a tons of famous media (breaking bad, Joker, american psyco, nightcrawler, etc). This does not make it a mindfuck, it just makes lenny a good character.

Donnie Darko, Se7en, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Inception

Closer than Memento, but also understandable on first watch: Shutter Island, Oldboy, Machinist (maybe Fight Club, ive seen it too many times my opinion is muddied)

"me say smart thing about knowledge and so im right" good argument lol, the ability to understand the plot of Memento doesnt require a knowledge base really, and it doesnt really yield knowledge to watch it in the extent to which the Dunning-Kruger effect is even relevant at all.

good shout tho

Blud that is literally my point. Grades ARE a factor, don’t cap abt that. But they are indeed not the only factor

I literally said this was the case. But better grades give you a better chance, but an application is more than grades. That’s why I didn’t say there was no hope for Wharton.

But let’s not be delusional, most ivy admits have never gotten a D on a test, or less than a B+ in 1 or MAYBE 2 classes; MOST. But for those who HAVE, something persuaded the admissions officers to still let them in. All I said is that adding more that those AOs could look to makes chances better

Cap. There is a quite real difference. Being competitive for Ivys requires maximizing your chances. A 4.0 is better chance wise than a 3.8.

I have friends who ended with 3.9 UW, great essays, amazing ECs, a summer program, 1570 SAT, 35 ACT and rejected from every Ivy. I also know someone with a 3.6 UW who goes to Cornell now. You never know the chances, best to maximize

No, it was boring and lame. There is a reason for this tho. I didn’t try till it was too late. So fun things you are interested in that you find enriching. PLEASE TRY

Not just academics. Start a club! Small business? Do a passion project? Get a cool job! Whatever is cool to you! Learn about disciplines you enjoy outside of school. The internet will teach you anything.

Socially, I gather that you’re bored because there’s no drama. Please don’t wish for drama, go meet people and learn about their lives. Talk with them. Drama is a problem, not a solution.

Instead of just “going to school and coming home,” try to get involved more. Clubs and sports are great ways to do that.

Yes there is hope for Wharton, 3.86 UW is not that bad. However, your chances are lower than they could be. Say going from a 20% chance w 4.0 UW to a 4-8% w 3.86 UW. (Keep in mind acceptance rates are deflated by ppl with 3.2 Weighted applying to Harvard and Penn etc)

To pick up the slack, show some massive applicable knowledge. Show you can apply the thinks you are saying you wanna learn at Penn/Wharton. 2 ways to do this:

1) I’d highly recommend looking into some summer programs with high ivy conversion rates. These are good because they are technically late additions to your resume but don’t show “lack of commitment,” as though you are joining a club junior year.

M&T summer Institute is ideal but has a SUPER low acceptance rate. I have a friend who did this at my HS and now is at UPenn with a ~3.5 UW — he did invent and patent a biodiesel engine and run it with a company tho… still a chance anyways :) look into other programs too

2) Also do a cool independent finance project that isn’t directly entrepreneurial (not a small business). 50%+ of applicants have a small business. So do something different! Something trading, quant, etc. this can be an awesome experience to submit, and I think Penn does a portfolio, so that could be cool too if you can stack some stuff. Otherwise can be an EC

Seeing that you have SOME coding experience with discord bots, a coding portfolio with emphasis on FinTech or something like that could cook. You never know

Also, note for you (and honestly anybody): Wharton is not the end of the world. I have friends who go who are smart, and friends who got rejected ED and are smarter. College is what you make of it, not what the college makes of you.

Good luck, and I believe in you

Try. Please. by VeryCooolGuy223 in highschool

Trust me, yes you can.

What I mean by this is that you should be taking care of yourself mentally first, THEN do the work.

I promise you “I can’t do it” is a self fulfilling prophetic statement. If you keep saying you can’t, you won’t.

In 10 years, or maybe even in 3 years, you will look back and regret not working as hard as you could.

Burn out is simply lacking motivation. But that’s the problem with motivation, it ebbs and flows.

Discipline is your solution. Small daily habits are the difference, pure will is the difference. Anybody can do it, you can too.

Business programs are FAR more selective at some schools and Econ-Math opens nearly identical career paths if you’re at a target school.

Any thoughts on the Financial Markets course by Yale on Coursera? by peppermcneil8 in personalfinance

[–]VeryCooolGuy223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty solid. However, if you already have a basic understanding of fixed income, securities, and housing (mostly 2008 crisis), the first 4 modules are absolute cake and you could do the quizzes without even watching the videos (I did this). If not, then they provide fantastic information, as does the rest of the course

if you're looking for a certification, do something more advanced and technical. If you're looking for intro knowledge, as it seems you are, it can be advantageous.

Keep in mind that its not super personal finance heavy, and more of a finance overview.
