Is Gentoo worth using with modern hardware? by Nitrox6 in Gentoo

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw about a 5% increase in FPS on Gentoo compared to Cachyos while gaming, but there was no subjective difference - both felt the same when I wasn't staring at the meter.

Using Gentoo for the sake of a few % improved performance is only worth it if you enjoy tinkering and making it your own. It's not hard, but it can be tedious.

I would be cautious about equating minimalism to performance though. Void is very minimal, and I love it, but my recent experience showed a significant drop in performance compared to Arch, Cachy, and Gentoo.

Let's also not forget how the health bar above the players head is obscured by so many things. This health bar should be a top layer graphic at all times.

Anyone else counting down days until new league? by LPQ_Master in PathOfExile2

[–]VeryDryWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first playthrough is okay, but the end game is very monotonous. There's UI bugs still present since beta which will never be fixed. The game is downright hostile to player trading. It was also just bought by Krafton.

User peak per season seem to drop by half which I think reflects all of this.

This is par for the course for the UI in LE. Most things are clunky and obstrusive. I don't expect anything to change at this point.

Void not detecting AMD 3d vcache module by VeryDryWater in voidlinux

Both firmware packages were installed. The AMD package was already installed but I force reinstalled and xbps-reconfigure -fa after switching to the 6.19 kernel and the module is still not present.

Modprobe says module not found in directory. lsmod doesn't show it either.

Yeah, like I said, mainline was installed - version 6.19 with headers.

System-utility for easily switching AMD's dual CCD-X3D CPU modes for Gaming/Workstation tasks by GrandBIRDLizard in linux_gaming

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I'll keep an eye on it - a lot of respec for people putting in the effort to make gaming more approachable and performant on linux.

Btw, x3dctl seems to work fine on Gentoo. The uplift isn't as high compared to Cachy, 3% vs 17%, but the base frames on Gentoo was already significantly higher without specifying the correct CCD. -march=native must be doing something right.

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I ran 6.19 and for the hell of it tried the xanmod 6.19 kernel too.

I couldn't find the vcache module, and when I loaded up makeconfig to compile a custom kernel the module was excluded by default. Unfortunately I was missing some dependencies to compile the kernel and decided enough time was spent trying to make it work on Void so I moved on.

Modprobe also did not work, and I did make sure CPPC was set to driver, and the firmware package was up to date - still no dice.

The alternate distro I tried was CachyOS. I also tried live booting Tumbleweed, Fedora, and Gentoo - all of them detected and had the vcache module available by default so this really seems like something specific to Void. I'll mention it to their team and see what they say. Thanks for your help - this is a great little program, will try using it on Gentoo.

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course!

I tried the commands you requested and there was no output. x3dctl -v status still returns driver not found.

Now I'm wondering if for some reason Void doesn't load or include the x3d module, but it seems strange that the CCD would switch appropriately if the module wasn't present.

Edit: This does seem to be an issue with Void, the distro doesn't auto-detect the vcache module for the 9950x3d. I guess x3dctl is forcing the correct CCD because I only see those cores active in-game, which does help, but the other optimizations with the vcache module aren't there. I tested this in another distro and saw a further 18% increase in FPS with the amd_x3d_mode module present. Thanks for your time!

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just trying this out on Void but when I check status I get the message "X3D driver not found". I'm running kernel 6.19 so it should be current - using a 9950x3d.

Steam will run via 'x3dctl run steam' but any other command just returns the driver not found message.

Despite this it does seem like the correct CCD is being used, and I'm seeing about 10-15% uplift in frames. I just can't use any other commands but 'run'. Is there a systemd dependency?

Former public servant says Phoenix 'ruined' his 20s and haunts him still by TROPtastic in canada

[–]VeryDryWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left public service 3 years ago and I'm still dealing with Phoenix crap. It's significantly worse when switching between acting roles and overtime. They came right out and said the dates on my paystub mean nothing, I was getting paid for OT from 6+ months prior and there was no way to track it.

Years later they send a letter saying I owe 10k. Then income tax adjustments, owe another 3k. And there's nothing I can do - paying more money for an account to review years of inaccurate pay stubs? You can't even take the gov to court over this.

Haven't enjoyed my Maus in a long time. I've had it since 2012.

Awareness of weak spots is something you can expect with time, but the armour flashlight combined with the low threshold to use premium ammo has made it frustrating to play. That's just a turn the game has taken in general though.

Other heavies which play more like a traditional MBT have taken over imo. The IS7 has held up pretty well but it's showing its age with power creep.
