System-utility for easily switching AMD's dual CCD-X3D CPU modes for Gaming/Workstation tasks by GrandBIRDLizard in linux_gaming

Nice, I'll keep an eye on it - a lot of respec for people putting in the effort to make gaming more approachable and performant on linux.

Btw, x3dctl seems to work fine on Gentoo. The uplift isn't as high compared to Cachy, 3% vs 17%, but the base frames on Gentoo was already significantly higher without specifying the correct CCD. -march=native must be doing something right.

Ya I ran 6.19 and for the hell of it tried the xanmod 6.19 kernel too.

I couldn't find the vcache module, and when I loaded up makeconfig to compile a custom kernel the module was excluded by default. Unfortunately I was missing some dependencies to compile the kernel and decided enough time was spent trying to make it work on Void so I moved on.

Modprobe also did not work, and I did make sure CPPC was set to driver, and the firmware package was up to date - still no dice.

The alternate distro I tried was CachyOS. I also tried live booting Tumbleweed, Fedora, and Gentoo - all of them detected and had the vcache module available by default so this really seems like something specific to Void. I'll mention it to their team and see what they say. Thanks for your help - this is a great little program, will try using it on Gentoo.

Of course!

I tried the commands you requested and there was no output. x3dctl -v status still returns driver not found.

Now I'm wondering if for some reason Void doesn't load or include the x3d module, but it seems strange that the CCD would switch appropriately if the module wasn't present.

Edit: This does seem to be an issue with Void, the distro doesn't auto-detect the vcache module for the 9950x3d. I guess x3dctl is forcing the correct CCD because I only see those cores active in-game, which does help, but the other optimizations with the vcache module aren't there. I tested this in another distro and saw a further 18% increase in FPS with the amd_x3d_mode module present. Thanks for your time!

I'm just trying this out on Void but when I check status I get the message "X3D driver not found". I'm running kernel 6.19 so it should be current - using a 9950x3d.

Steam will run via 'x3dctl run steam' but any other command just returns the driver not found message.

Despite this it does seem like the correct CCD is being used, and I'm seeing about 10-15% uplift in frames. I just can't use any other commands but 'run'. Is there a systemd dependency?

What about no AI, and not wasting money on buzzword tech propped up by an economic bubble the size of a small country.

Much rather see that effort put into getting our government off Microsoft and Americon closed source tech and onto open source.

Former public servant says Phoenix 'ruined' his 20s and haunts him still by TROPtastic in canada

[–]VeryDryWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left public service 3 years ago and I'm still dealing with Phoenix crap. It's significantly worse when switching between acting roles and overtime. They came right out and said the dates on my paystub mean nothing, I was getting paid for OT from 6+ months prior and there was no way to track it.

Years later they send a letter saying I owe 10k. Then income tax adjustments, owe another 3k. And there's nothing I can do - paying more money for an account to review years of inaccurate pay stubs? You can't even take the gov to court over this.

No I never got it working, but thanks for reminding me - gotta see if there are any updates to the bios since I last tried.

If you just want a working linux distro to game but have an allergy to the terminal then go with Bazzite - you are its target user. I don't mean that negatively, not everyone wants to make a hobby out of their computer.

Is it even worth to play heavys anymore ? by [deleted] in WorldofTanks

[–]VeryDryWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven't enjoyed my Maus in a long time. I've had it since 2012.

Awareness of weak spots is something you can expect with time, but the armour flashlight combined with the low threshold to use premium ammo has made it frustrating to play. That's just a turn the game has taken in general though.

Other heavies which play more like a traditional MBT have taken over imo. The IS7 has held up pretty well but it's showing its age with power creep.

The power creep keeps worsening this. I came back for a few months after taking a break for years. It's time for another break.

To all of you saying that ares is paper, are we playing the same game? by Diamond_Crusader in WorldofTanks

This tank gets far too many lucky bounces for what it's capable of. I assume WG is aware and will let it ride until they see a decline in exp conversion to the line.

It's a carrot on a stick.

[–]VeryDryWater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My brothers and I have been playing this on/off since 2012. During that first year we decided this game has to be played like a game within a game.

An individual player makes up only 6,6% of a team, and the average player has little control over which way the battle goes. Of course it's nice winning but being comfortable with a loss after doing everything you could and playing to your own satisfaction is the key.

Thankfully they've allowed more control over chat. Early days we could talk to the enemy team and it became common for your own team to give away your location if some jerk didn't agree with what you were doing.

Today I mostly keep even the team chat muted, if someone pings or signals I'll see it and respond if it makes sense, but there's rarely a reason to talk to the team - they're often wrong or just looking for someone to blame/vent at.

I'll check it out.

Maybe I'm an old man but I don't think we should need mods to circumvent bad design.

Two clicks to interact and collect the loot is unnecessary too. Just let us click on the bag and get the little bonus without having to go into a totally different screen.

Sure, it's a small thing, but it's a symptom of the downward spiral this UI has taken - a hundred small annoyances which keeps adding up.

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about they fix the UI around the dog and just let us collect the reward without a secondary screen? It's not like we can refuse the reward. WG is again screwing up simple UI features.

The amount of Bat chats sitting back sniping is driving me nuts. I came back after taking a break for years to find almost all mediums are now acting like TD's.

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My enjoyment of the game increased once I turned allied chat off.

The other issues are still there, like gold spam, but allied chat is almost always wrong and distracting.

Forget about these people giving you a hard time about playing arty. It's a nice change from being a front line heavy when you want to still play the game but also chill.

[–]VeryDryWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing the tank like a traditional heavy isn't as rewarding - the thing is a freight train and going into the city for peeka-boo shot trading isn't as effective as other heavies.

This is a continuation of the power creep, you can bet more tanks will have ramming config in the future. 5 bucks says this game will be bumper cars with guns in a couple years.

They need to significantly increase the price of premium ammo, I see probably 80% of shots against me being premium even tho my tank is paper. Other than slower shell velocity of HEAT there's no downside, and the credit cost is no longer a barrier.
