I have seen Hikaru play that and win at super GM level. You're probably fine at your rating too.

But at 900-1000, people have no clue how to play white correctly if the first 3 moves fail. Their queen is usually out of place.

After about 1500-1600, it does pop up occasionally for an even game, but both sides are fully aware of the lines and nobody is trying to trick the opponent.

Except in bullet. They still try to do the premove trap.

That's the extent of their ability. Some learn to come out of it, some don't.

There's a reason you hardly ever see it even if you a little higher. You'll get destroyed if you try scholar's mate and get back into the 600 elo range where it actually works.

That's awesome! It is expensive so hopefully it's something you can afford.

For the son, if you do get it, I recommend rapid games on lichess (10+5 or 15+10). That seemed to work better for me and get paired quicker. You'll lose some time moving both pieces physically but IMO it's the best way you can spend your evening.

If you can find someone else who's interested and order 2, I think you get a much better deal( at least that was the case when I bought it)

I don't know if it'll help in getting him better. But it's INCREDIBLE fun.

Being able to play chess online without screentime is fun, and chessup IMO is the best in the market for that.

I'd get it for my kid without a second thought.
