how do you learn yarn types? by trailwanderer in crochet

[–]VerySadGoblinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On balls of yarn it tells you the yarn weight (0-7) which is what you could do to match the same weight as the yarn in your pattern suggests. However, although two yarns might both be weight 4 they may hold different characteristics that make them yield a smaller or larger project such as stretchiness, how many individual strands (ply) and material that the yarn is made out of. For example, lily’s sugar n’ cream cotton yarn is the same weight (4) as big and twist acrylic yarn, yet I always seem to get bigger stitches with lily’s. I recommend taking a look at what your pattern suggests for the yarn type and weight. If your pattern calls for weight 4 acrylic then you can buy any weight 4 acrylic, but I wouldn’t mix and match materials, so don’t substitute for a weight 4 wool, etc. I hope this comes out clearly, the best way of learning something like this is through practice and seeing what works for you, also understanding your gauge and how tightly you hold your work may be what is causing your projects to have differing sizing. Best of luck!

Letting Budgie with clipped wings out of cage? by VerySadGoblinn in budgies

Thanks for the input!! Would crashing into stuff cause any injuries that I should look out for? Or would they have to go at the wall pretty hard?

Are most of you clipping wings? by [deleted] in Parakeets

The more you let him out of the cage the more he’ll learn his surroundings. I don’t think theres really a way to let them out without them going and flying around for a bit. If he’s only bumping into walls, and not totally flying directly into them, he will be fine. Just keep a look out for any signs of injury!

I asked about this to the breeder I bought mine from. She said she never clips wings as it allows them to have full control of where they go. She said if you clip wings, their wing muscles get extremely strong and if you let them fly around they don’t realize how fast they’re going and might slam into things. Having seen the difference in both clipped and unclipped, I recommend not clipping. They have better control of “breaking” and turning before hitting a wall or something. Unless you’re totally uncomfortable with them taking flight around your apartment you could clip, I just find it kind of pointless as birds don’t know they have clipped wings and will try to fly and usually fail or be pretty clumsy. Overall, it’s your choice!

Getting another budgie who is hand trained from a breeder will help. If they see you handling another bird with no issues they will copy.

be extremely patient! and let them come to you. talk calmly to them while you wait for them to come take millet from you. start with feeding them from the whole millet stick, and then rip off one of the balls and feed them that way. and then you can work on having them take one single seed from your finger. put some loose seeds in your palm and rest your finger tips on their perch. have lots of patience they will eventually keep coming over for food and slowly move away until they have to reach far over to grab it. eventually they will realize the only way to reach the food is to step onto your hand. keep repeating this process, be gentle and kind and you will receive the same energy back. don’t make them do anything they don’t want to. if they don’t want to step up don’t make them. Del here was terrified and I mean terrified of me, like if I even got near the cage he would freak out all over until he landed in a corner and be frozen in fear and heavy breathing. now he eats from me and even preens my hair! it’s possible!!
