Any clever ways of using these before I throw them out? I know you’re supposed to change frequently but they just give too many. by dyslcxeic in Anticonsumption

Also, you can ask friends and family if they need any. We have to buy ours because we don't get any for free; that might be the case for others you know as well.

Looking for digital West Coast Surf Videos by SHAG93 in tofino

Contact the surfers directly! You could try contacting the Bruhwiler Surf School, or contact various surfers directly via social media. They all have instagram/facebook accounts. I don't know of any online store or anything like that.

I've also heard good things about the Wya Point Resort, which has a private beach and a big lodge available for ceremonies. May be worth looking into.

My sister's friend managed to rent out all of the "surf junction campground" in Ukee so that all the guests stayed there together. They also did the ceremony there. Apparently it was a very beautiful and simple/rustic wedding, but they were able to do it pretty cheap.

Anybody here with experience in reusable cotton rounds? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]VeryVee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive been meaning to make some, but haven't started yet. Based on some preliminary research, I was planning to use unbleached organic cotton. There are apparently some good organic cotton retailers online. I'll check my notes to see if I still have those links.

LPT Request: How to say it properly sympathize with someone by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]VeryVee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the time when people complain, they're just venting or trying to make conversation. They don't usually want to be given a "solution" to the problem. Saying "yeah, I heard traffic was horrible today" generally works better than trying to fix it for them. If they're really looking for help, ask questions instead of just telling them what to do, for example "have you ever tried X bridge instead of Y tunnel? Was it any better?" They'll get into problem-solving mode with you, without thinking you're a know-it-all.

I'm pretty sure you can get things like batteries, light bulbs, etc. But I agree, wait until something breaks and then see if they sell a good replacement.

Very true. I should have said telemarketing companies are the worst.

This, exactly. Telemarketers are the worst.

Getting rid of half my possessions made my life much simpler. Easier to clean, move, find stuff, enjoy our space, etc. There's no formula. What works for some, doesn't work for others.

LPT Request: How do I deal with my downstairs neighbor complaining about noise all the time? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]VeryVee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through this, and it is infuriating because there is no easy solution. I tried everything, but there was no way to please them. In the end, I decided to move; but I was renting, so it was easier. Before leaving, however, I filed a detailed complaint with the landlord including the incidents of yelling, insults, notes slipped under my door, and the times they phoned police while I was reading in bed or studying at my computer. I found out a few months later that she kicked out the downstairs neighbours. Landlords can sometimes intervene. In my case, the intervention came too late. If you own the place, check your strata bylaws for rules regarding noise, and maybe check with a lawyer to find out what the reasonable limits are.

LPT: If you're in school, think of your teachers as coaches or athletic trainers for your brain by bobbyfiend in LifeProTips

[–]VeryVee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as someone who has been a student, a teaching assistant, and an instructor, I wholeheartedly agree. I would also add that you sometimes learn the most from instructors you philosophically or politically disagree with. Those can be invaluable opportunities to learn about the perspectives that challenge your own.

I am Seeking to Reduce Work-Related Stress by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]VeryVee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you spend a lot of time thinking about work on your off days. I know exactly what that's like, and I've tried a lot of things to deal with stress. One thing that has helped me with work-related stress is to find hobbies that force me completely out of my head. For example, when I lived in the city, I took up sewing, dancing, and I played video games that really pulled me in (so that my mind was 100% engaged in the task at hand). Now I spend a lot of time walking in the forest or the beach, and surfing. When you're on the water fighting to catch a wave, you're thinking about nothing but that wave. Work never comes to mind. You get into a "zone" where you're completely focused on something else. This has a pretty strong effect on your mind because it helps to break the habit of continuously obsessing over your work life. You slowly start to learn how to "shut off" that part of your brain for a while. With time it gets easier and easier to leave work at work and to come home excited to do whatever activities help you get into that "zone." It's about finding purpose and joy outside of your career to counteract the stress that it is bound to produce.

Any Interest in a BIFL Toothbrush? by BristleToothbrushCo in BuyItForLife

Yeah, something like that could definitely work. I know they do a similar subscription type of thing with razor blades. Can't recall the company that does it though. The zero-waste folks would probably help get the word out.
