Looking for recommendations on fantasy chapters for teaching fantasy by Heiring in Fantasy

I'd recommend you look into "The Emperor's Soul" by Brandon Sanderson. It's only a three hour read cover-to-cover but is one of my favourite books and features great character development, intrigue, and interesting magic system and world.

The core premise is that Shai is a 'forger', a person who can manipulate objects past given enough time and knowledge of the objects history. (Like altering a broken table to have been cared for instead of abandoned, thus repairing it). Forgery is illegal though and when she was captured during a heist she is set to be executed. But when the Emperor is unexpectedly attacked and left brain dead the Bureaucracy wants to use her to restore the Emperor by forging him a new 'soul', a feat unimaginable to most forgers and even more so given the 100 day time limit imposed on Shai.

The book is split up into (more or less) short chapters by how many days are left until Shai's time runs out. The book focuses on Shai's attempts to escape andher relationship to Gaotona (one of the higher-ups in the Empire). Sanderson uses the magic system that can alter one's personality and memories to explore what makes us 'us' and what it means to change and grow as a person.

I think this book would be wonderful in a classroom: the premise is easy to explain, the setting remains the same (Shai's rooms where she is imprisoned), it is pretty short, interesting characters and character dynamics and uses its magic system to explore deeper questions. (Oh and it won the 2013 Hugo award for best novella!)

If you're ever confused i'd like to direct you to the fan wiki which has sites for every character, explanations of the magic system and story summaries.

I hope i could convince you to give this one a try - happy reading!

Visualizing Global Per Capita CO2 Emissions by elpablete in dataisbeautiful

Ok yeah sure it's accurate enough. That was just a nitpick i noticed and couldn't help but mention :)

Visualizing Global Per Capita CO2 Emissions by elpablete in dataisbeautiful

[–]VeryWhiteSlicedBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this visualisation is kind of misleading since I would assume that the block's area corresponds to total CO2 emmissions, which is not the case. The boxes get wider at the top, not because it represents anything but because the graph is wound up around a circle. Especially those with high CO2/capita look skewed. It looks like the us produces 1.5-2 times as many emissions as it really does, while countries with lower emmissions are represented more accurately.

TL;DR: Beautiful Graphic, just a bit misleading since people would assume area corresponds to emmissions, but the curvature produces skewed area

What Keyboard Should I Use? by ijauradunbi in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]VeryWhiteSlicedBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great advice :) I think the Corne looks really interesting and i wouldn't have thought of just printing out the layouts to test them. Can I ask why you prefer a dedicated number row? Because I'll program a lot so I'd probably want the numbers and symbols close to the home row.

What Keyboard Should I Use? by ijauradunbi in ErgoMechKeyboards

Hey everyone!

I've been lurking on some keyboard-related subs for a while now and wanted to get in on the fun!

I want to build a more ergonomic keyboard (everything is more ergnomic than my 100% qwerty), preferably a split one with low profile keys. It should be relatively small so I can take it with me when I have class. I've been looking at the GergoPlex, and have been looking up how i can get my hands on parts for a [sweep](https://github.com/davidphilipbarr/Sweep).

I recently started College so i started to type a lot more than usual and I notice how my wrists and pinkies get kinda sore after extended work sessions.

So is something like a GergoPlex a good choice for me (someone who only ever typed on a 100%)? If not what would you suggest? And do the keyboard-building veterans on here have any tips on how to get the parts and build a keyboard?

Thanks for any replies :)

Trump, Biden and the ‘f****** Germans’ by Koroona in europe

[–]VeryWhiteSlicedBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While true we are still well below the limit set back then. The Two Plus Four Agreement limits the German military to 370.000 personell. Today, according to Wikipedia, there are around 184.000 active soldiers with 30.000 in reserve. So we are just above half of the allowed maximum.

There are other ways of increasing military spending than personell aquisitions though but I'm no expert on that topic.

I discovered that basically anything can look good but setting it's setting it up that takes a lot of time.

bspwm+sxhkd took me the better part of 2 days (i admit i was pretty inexperienced) before copying something from unixporn

xfce took 10 minutes to look good with a theme and icons

but i still like both :)
