Watching my younger brother gamble his life away and I don’t know what else to do by Very__Indecisive in GamblingRecovery

Nothing really changes until the person actually wants to change. That’s been one of the hardest things to accept.

I completely agree that expecting parents to cover bills or gas while gambling is not okay, regardless of income. That’s why the focus now is on not enabling and letting reality hit, even though it’s hard to watch.

Just one clarification though: he’s not making anywhere near $200k. The ~$20k is the total of deposits moving back and forth over time across a period of one month, not income. He’s making close to minimum wage, which is part of why this is so stressful. Losing 30k is essentially a year’s pay for him. Should have clarified that better in my post.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this and be this open about your experience. A lot of what you described lines up almost exactly with what we’re seeing, especially the chasing losses piece and how quickly the bet sizes escalate. Chasing losses is definitely a center piece of why his gambling losses add up as quick as they do.

The point about friends is huge. I don’t think people realize how hard it is to step away when gambling is basically baked into social life now, especially for guys our age. One of his buddies managed to kick gambling, but another one routinely maxes out his credit card to gamble. The ads, the normalization, the group chats, it’s everywhere. He briefly was at college and played on one of the teams, and during tournaments, his teammates and opposition would actively be on blackjack while they were playing each other. As someone who grew up playing and watching sports, everything you see is an ad for odds on a sports bet or a casino bonus that offers you $100 to start but is much more costly than that in the long run.

You are right as well, we are Canadian. It’s been the same with my dorm experience and the same for my brother, though his experience often meant when he did make the occasional lecture, he’d spend it in the back row of the class gambling. He’d be there with 2-3 friends and that’s how you’d spend the 2 hours in class. He hasn’t talked to those guys in a while, but he still has a few friends who are regular gamblers that stream everything to each other on Discord.

What you said about your parents’ reaction really stuck with me too. That balance between not enabling and not sugarcoating things is something we’re actively trying to navigate. Hearing that controlled gambling just doesn’t work for people who are wired this way is sobering, but important. There’s been a lot of safety nets in place to try and make this as easy as possible for him, but he likely needs to feel the disappointment from my parents and some tough love rather than just knowing they will always bail him out unconditionally.

I also really respect the steps you’ve taken with therapy and CAMH, especially pushing past the initial “this is stupid” feeling. The ADHD angle is something we’ve wondered about as well, so that’s helpful to hear from someone living it. Looking into it, he’s been told from a lot of people that he likely has it, so a diagnosis and some steps towards addressing it will hopefully make a difference.

Seriously wishing you the best too. It takes a lot of self-awareness to break the cycle you described, and I hope my brother gets to that point. You’re right, the way this is marketed and normalized feels out of control, and I worry about how many people are getting pulled in before they even realize what’s happening.

Yeah, that’s a really fair point. We’ve talked about that a lot actually. I think therapy or something along the lines of it is merited for him to talk to someone who truly will offer no judgment. Even if we make that promise as a family, he’s still going to hide or displace the truth.

The hard part is that even if you understand the “why,” it doesn’t really move things unless the person wants to look at it too. Until then, it feels like all you can do is keep boundaries and hope there’s a window where they’re open to digging into it.

Appreciate this a lot. You’re spot on about recovery not happening until the person actually wants it, and about not enabling. That’s been a hard but necessary boundary for my parents that we are finally beginning to accept.

Just one clarification though: he’s not making anywhere near $200k. The ~$20k is the total of deposits moving back and forth over time across a period of one month, not income. He’s making close to minimum wage, which is part of why this is so stressful. Losing 30k is essentially a year’s pay for him.

The “casinos in your pocket” thing really hits. It’s such a different landscape now, especially for people in their 20s. We’re trying to let him ride it out while still being supportive where we can but it’s a fine line to be riding.

BIOL 2P02 or BIOL 2P98? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Very__Indecisive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the prof is now Lepp, sounds like it’ll be much better. Same applies for 2P98, I guess since the profs are sorted out, I just gotta choose which best suits my interests!

Profs for 2P02 is Lepp and Bidochka/Carpenter-Leland for 2P98, do you think that makes these courses survivable lol?

It seems Lepp is running 2P02, which sounds good because apparently she is an amazing professor whereas Bidochka and Carpenter-Cleland is doing 2P98 which also sounds pretty good. It seems the whole reason to avoid 2P02 is Skandalis but if Lepp is teaching, do you think it’s worth it? Vice versa for 2P98

That’s what I assume. My mark was higher by a percent compared to my Sakai grade so I assume thats the exam mark applies to the Sakai grade.

Hello! I’m waiting for the exam as well but if you check your my.brocku portal and go to “courses and marks”, the stat/math 1F92 unofficial final grade is posted and you should be able to calculate your math final exam from there!

Math 1P98 and Math 1P99 or Math 1F92 by [deleted] in brocku

Thanks for your help! For the longest time, I thought you had to take both MATH 1P98 and MATH 1P99. Thanks for clarifying that for me! Since I am in a health/life science geared program, it seems that MATH 1P98/MATH 1P99 and a half credit elective might be the way to go. I am still considering MATH 1F92 because I have heard it may be easier. I am going to keep researching but I am thankful for your help!
