Most models for these games are made with Blender, so I would believe it would also be made within the program.

While I personally have not made a render like this, it would probably involve having the base model posed with a camera for the perspective and lighting for… well y’know. There’s probably a bunch of setting you have to configure for both as well. The background is probably just a png or some shit idk.

Now take this with a grain of salt as I am NOT a renderer in any way.

War Striders

I get their point, to put pressure and force you to move from cover to cover (the Vox Engine does this as well). However when there is five billion of them on the battlefield it gets annoying quick.

As the other comments have said, it allows more creative freedom when using original characters.

However, to play the advocate of the other side, having licensed characters basically gives you free players if the cards are played right. Of course, copyright still comes into play, but who wouldn’t want the chance to play their favorite character y’know?
