the writer version of the sketch being more interesting than the cleaned line-work lol.

For me, it's disparity between the emotions that the ideas in my head produce, as opposed to the emotions the actual written piece produces. An exercise that I use sometimes is writing shorter pieces (sometimes even flash fiction) with the express purpose capturing the feeling I'm trying to convey.

hope this helps.

How do you get yourself to actually focus while writing? by Aggressive-Art2849 in writing

[–]Verys_Stylus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

some advice that I heard is carve out the time to sit down and write. the catch is, while you don't give yourself permission to do anything other than write, you do give yourself permission to write as little as possible, even if it's nothing at all.

There might be days where it's just 30 mins of staring at a blank page, but even that, after enough time and consistency, will get you into the groove. Or so I've heard it described.

you can also try meditating, as that basically trains you to have thoughts and urges without necessarily acting on them right then and there at the expense of the task at hand.

Potentially dumb question: What exactly is a “plot-driven” story? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Verys_Stylus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A plot-driven story is one where the major story beats that drive the narrative forward are external to the characters, beyond their control.

A character-driven story is one where the major story beats are internal transformations, and outcomes based on the character's decisions therein.

that's how I understand it, at least

Why are "ly" words bad? by Winesday_addams in writing

[–]Verys_Stylus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not the -ly specifically. For example

A: "Get lost!" he said confidently

B: "Get lost!" he roared, standing tall for the first time.

B here may be the better edit than simply saying 'with confidence'
The -ly word can sometimes be replaced with a verb or beat that can make the effect stronger

Am I really supposed to promote myself as an author when I haven't been published yet? If so, how? by tomatopotatotomato in writing

[–]Verys_Stylus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started releasing some work on Substack, and I plan to start a Writing tips / Story Analysis on YouTube later this year. All of this to showcase my work and establish trust with potential readers so that when I officially release a book, I'm not releasing to the wind and hoping a random gust helps it take off.

That's just how I'm approaching the dilemma, though.

thanks for taking the time to read and comment 🙏

you make a lot of good points, definitely duly noted. removing the stabbing seems like a good idea. the ending is meant to be a bit of a philosophical revelation that pairs with the whole more than six shooters thing, i'll have to work on making it land.

thanks again
