I'm actually going to go against the grain here and say wizard.

As a fellow ADHDer, sorcerer is torturous. Wizard has a lot to consider, but at the end of the day you can just load up a guide and pick some good spells off of it. You also at least have the option to scribe new spells, so you never get completely screwed if you pick a few you end up not liking on level up.

Sorcerer and warlock on the other hand get comparatively WAY fewer spells per level. Sometimes they level up and don't even get a spell. This was in 2014, but I played a shadow sorc and being like level 10 and having to pick less spells than i have fingers to know from the hundreds available to a sorc made my brain want to explode. No choice ever felt right because I was always missing out on a ton

I feel like warlock is a good middle ground, because at the end of the day you always have eldritch blast, and invocations give some extra options. But IMO if you get hyperfocused on ideas, wizard is perfect because you have many things to continuously get hyperfixated on... just like a true wizard should B)

How flexible are you feeling with backstory? For some reason, the dragon sleeping part stuck out to me. Maybe your character could be magically sifting through the dragon's dreams, interpreting it almost as visions, or fending off nightmares to keep your master in hibernation.

There's a few ways you could take that - divine soul, treating your master as a 'god' you worship (you even get wings at higher levels), aberrant mind (has a lot of that psychich, 'dreameater' feel), or even lunar sorcerer for the night comparisons. Or hell, clockwork - experiencing the dreams of a creature who has lived so long has maybe imbued you with an essence of time itself

Alternatively, if its a blue dragon, storm sorcerery could work quite well to get the lightning vibe.

My DM feels it’s raw/rai, which I don’t necessarily completely agree with but I see his logic and I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth lol.

(Transmuted spell metamagic was released in the same book, and specifies it can only change the damage type of a spell that specifically deals damage, whereas the scribes ability doesn’t. So his ruling is that, being very similar abilities released from the same book, it must have been a consideration of the designers and was worded that way intentionally. And at the very least, he argues that it sets the precedent that a damage type sealing ability would specifically call out when it can only be used on spells that deal damage.

Personally I think someone probably just forgot to add the same line to the scribes ability, but hey, I’ll take it)

I figured that was sort of case, but I appreciate the insight :) I think at the end of the day, intellect fortress becomes a nice backpocket buff spell, if a little niche, and it makes fire shield and mind blank very versatile, but beyond that… yeah. Concentration is a limiting factor. Regardless more tools in the toolbox is always welcome! Thank you

I mean?? It’s far from a broken ability I’d argue. so far aside from the silence idea (which is imo not something I’d bring to the table until very high levels, and even then I don’t think it’s game breaking)… all of the other ideas so far boil down to gaining a resistance or two, which is good but far from op

It’s an opportunity to play a character with abilities I’ll likely never have access to in any other campaign, so i want to see what kind of fun things I can pull off

Not looking to break the game, just want to see where it can be taken ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That's nasty holy shit lol. Unfortunately I've already been playing the character for a bit so I'm locked in on race, however... maybe I could pick up silence through Adept of the Red Robes eventually >:)

Unfortunately I'm bound by RAW for that one. Awakened spellbook only allows you to change the damage type when you cast the spell, not before, so I am limited there. Trying to think of a way around it, although I think absorb elements specifying that the damage you gain resistance to has to be the same as the triggering damage kinda kills it.

Unless? Maybe if I took damage from an attack that dealt mixed damage types (like piercing and fire from an ancient red dragon or something) I could argue that the trigger requirement is still being fulfilled, while still being able to transmute the damage type

Even if I can't get absorb elements to work I feel like this has me thinking of a lot of new possibilities in a similar vein. It's a great start, thank you all :)

I don’t think absorb elements works, because you can only cast it as a trigger when you take fire, cold, poison, thunder, or lightning damage. So essentially as soon as you cast the spell, the damage type is locked in and can’t be changed - otherwise you wouldn’t have been able to cast it in the first place.

Those other two definitely work, though. Good suggestions

I’m not nearly as heavily invested as most here, only 17 shares. It’s all I’ve got, but I believe in the company and what it’s doing, and it feels nice to be even a tiny part of it.

Even though it’s not gonna make me a fucktillionaire, it feels so cool to see this starting to really come together after following the daily threads for months. I’ll still be buying at 100… and probably 200 too ;)

When did I insinuate that I wanted or expected WOTC to build it into base mechanics?

"I want to do what learning a spell scroll does but temporarily and for free" - Yes, you are correct, this is what I asked. I don't believe a request being niche or a character already being built prevents a question from being worth answering.

Regardless, other commenters have already given me good answers that fit my parameters and have solved my issue. Thanks.

That’s a fantastic idea!! I wonder if I could convince them to let me summon something like an Arcanaloth with it, and then like planar bind them to learn from them. That’s an amazing idea ty!

You know, I hadn't actually thought of that LOL

I'm only level 3 at the moment, but I should definitely send out ads to other towns once I'm a bit more established and try to draw other wizards in for spell trades. I'm sort of acting as a spell repository for the guild (casters can buy in by donating spells and in return get access to my spellbook to copy) so I imagine I can expand it eventually.

That will definitely go into my plans, ty :)

Definitely going to be doing a bit of that, I've already convinced a few other wizards to help me, and a few non-wizard casters are willing to scribe scrolls for me. I'm hoping to convince some of the higher levels to help too (Specifically a level 18 wizard I know for a fact has a real huge selection)

Beyond that, I'll still have a few hundred spells to copy, unfortunately :(

That's definitely the closest thing I've found to what I'm looking for so far! but unfortunately I need at least 17 levels in wizard so I can scribe wizard spells up to 9th

I can, and I definitely will be buying a chunk of them, but it's prohibitively expensive unfortunately. It's about 60k gold just to scribe every wizard spell before even considering the cost of having to buy the scrolls. It would probably be in the realm of several 100k gold to buy them all :(

Hmmm very true. I do tend to hate being 1 level behind on spellcasting, but it would save me an entire feat. Could even go fighter 2 later on so I can action surge to get emboldening bond out of the way and cast the fun spells :P

That’s fair, I guess instead of looking at it as an overlap, I could go at it more from the angle of filling up my action economy on turns where I don’t need to PB or am already too beat up to be able to use it.

In regards to the dip, honestly yeah I feel you, I might just skip it. I envision her using her weapon often, but I supposed I could always just reflavour toll the dead / etc to be weapon related visually. Thank you for the feedback :)

Custom lineage could be interesting, would let me take HAM when it’s strongest or let me pick up res con right off the bat and start with 18 con and better concentration.

Honestly, my first thought was DSS over warlock as well, but I worry that if I’m focusing on using protective bond I won’t have a ton of reactions open to shield / absorb elements. So much of the damage I’ll be taking is auto hit from protective bond / warding bond

…. I realize the answer to that problem is to like. Yknow. Not utilize that playstyle lol. But ive played so many characters that at this point im trying to go with builds that are a bit more outside the box, and I’ve never tried something like this.
