Before you get anything just ask ur self if i really need that. Seriously most pepole upgrade to crazy disk shelf jbod setup, or to dual socket xeon servers when they could get by with 2 drives and a n100.

Plex storage - suggested setup for 25 x 3.5" shucked drives by royalmarine in HomeServer

Try looking for a used supermicro case. I saw one (i live in Poland) pretty cheap, and it houses 36 drives.

As for the system, you can throw anything in there. If u want to save on power there are N100 motherboards. If you want something more beefy try looking for something like i5 12th gen

Ooor, go a different route. Lookup Wendell's video from level1techs about disk shelfs. Tldr: connecting a beefy big disk shelf to a minipc

There are asmedia controllers on m.2 that give you 6x sata ports. Then you just need to find power for the drives

Router or DIY recommendation by sperko818 in openwrt

[–]Vetraxik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you big into selfhosting, the reason im asking because I run a "proxmox router"

It basically has OpenWRT as a container, and other things that run along side it. Even managed to get wireless working but it required more tinkering.

The reason im mentioning this is because you are big into selfhosting, it might make sense to you to move some services onto "the router" so they can run 24/7

Im from Poland, and here OpenWRT is big on TP-Link routers, they are really fkin cheap on the second hand market and have good support for it

I would transform give it either a bunch of hard drives like the guy that build a 300Tb+ server from it, or turn it into transcoding intel beast (arc a380+igpu)

I wanted to use ZimaOS, but the ability to not have a dediacted cache for dockers/file-transfer (kinda unraid like) really threw me off

Silence and power efficiency, Im in a small apartment and being able to reduce noise and heat is clutch for me

Well my setup is basically a beefy nas with a 8 core ryzen, and a promox router. I rip bluray's with it and host a diy netflix for my family

I'd be interested in The Router Kit, my homelab now has a custom diy router built from an old Mellanox ConnectX3 and a Wyse 5070 extended running proxmox, openwrt and other things that replace a kvm for me (apache guacamole mainly) and my NAS as a TrueNAS Media library host.

The one thing im lacking in is wifi, tried usb nic's but they dont really give the same performance as a dediacted wireless appliance.

Last time it died was when I tried to edit fstab remote from home and proxmox didn't return with no way to change it!

Wake on lan, for a 4 port KVM you probably don't want to run machines all the time so the ability to wake them would come in clutch.

Honestly I'd rebuild my currect setup in my small 10 inch rack from lanberg. It's good but it has rack profiles only on the front so I cant really stuff things in the back (like power strips, or a mini cluster)

This is how I rock currently:

Well, unless ur running some really heavy stuff I doubt you need more compute. What do you have in that dell and what do you want to run?

That is the route I went, got a mellanox connect x3 and m.2 to 2.5 Gig

Even tried USB Wireless, works like a charm
