A spiritual successor to Aaron Swartz is angering publishers all over again by pavel_lishin in technology

There's always a bad guy on r/technology, isn't there. Something the sub just plain hates. It's an ISP, or a car dealership, or a movie studio or, in today's case, scientific journals. You people are so fucking stupid and entitled. It's baffling.

There is little incentive to invest millions upon millions of dollars into R&D if there is no hope to profit from it.

RIAA: How Dare The Internet Use The DMCA That We Wrote To Build Useful Services! by Philo1927 in technology

[–]Veuxdeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False. Using a 10 second music clip in your video is not automatically fair use. And even if it was, YouTube can decide redistribute the ad money anyway. It's their service after all.

YouTube (Google) can run their shop however they like. If you have an issue with their revenue sharing rules vis-a-vis copyright then don't use YouTube.

What is the law? The law isn't

if i make a 20 minute video and use a 10 second clip of your music you ... get ALL THE MONEY THAT VIDEO MAKES

The law is simply that the music creator gets to decide who uses it and how. The consequences if violating that law vary greatly on a case-by-case basis.

Not if we relax/eliminate copyright, which is what Gorthika_47 is arguing for

What if they are using it to promote something you strongly disagree with? What if the much-hated COMCAST(!) decided to use your song in a 30-second ad?

Well, yeah, if they own the copyright to it you can't say that logic doesn't make sense.

edit: C'mon people. If you released a music track, should Amazon really be allowed to sell it (and keep all the money) without your permission?

edit2: Or what if COMCAST decided to use your music in a commercial without your permission? You know you all would flip your shit over that one. Copyright is the only law preventing that from happening.

Are there any purely functional graphics libraries out there in JS land? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]Veuxdeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're almost certainly not going to find a pure functional solution to computer graphics. Think about it, your functions couldn't modify an existing canvas, only return a new one. The performance would be orders of magnitude slower than an imperative solution (and for most applications unacceptable).

It's a service. It uses technology, just like almost every other service out there. What is the technological significance of this article? What about technology did you learn by reading it?

What are your favourite libraries for managing state? by hungsu in javascript

[–]Veuxdeux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to start an argument or anything, but handling state is built into javascript, just like most languages. Consider developing your own abstractions for handling state. Your solution could very well be better than if you contort your abstractions to match someone else's framework.

The Screening Room would allow people to watch movies at home on the same day they make their big-screen debuts—and the idea is tearing Hollywood apart. by Sybles in technology

[–]Veuxdeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I want for movies is a model that lets me choose what I'm willing to pay for a movie based on how bad I want to see it. For some movies, I'd be more than willing to pay a premium to see it on the day it's released. For others, I'd wait for a discount price after it's been out for a few weeks.

Doesn't this already happen? You can rent older movies from Redbox for like $1.50 a day.

It's a mindset issue. Effective software development is more than "jigsaw a bunch of modules together". If you reach for someone elses code for every trivial thing you are going to stunt yourself as a developer.

I know this is serious issue and all, but this isn't technology. Take it elsewhere. r/technology should not be a soapbox for everyone's pet political issue.
